Shikoku broadly follows Japan’s climatic pattern with August being the hottest month and mid-winter cooling things right down in January, although the island is known for having milder weather year-round. Rainfall can be higher on Shikoku than other areas of the country. The spring months of March to May are good for hiking, as is the autumn, particularly October. These are the classic pilgrimage times and seasonal colours are at their best with cherry blossom in the spring and golden hues in the autumn.

Start your trip in the historical Takamatsu and discover Kotohira-gu and the Kanamaru-za Old Theatre that features the traditional intricacies of an old-style kabuki playhouse. Admire the gorgeous Ritsurin Park, built during the Edo Period and widely considered as one of the top three beautiful gardens of Japan. Not forgetting the famous art sculptures of Naoshima – from Takamatsu, take a ferry and arrive at the atmospheric Naoshima Island. Home to some of the finest contemporary art, the first stop is the renowned Benesse Art Museum before exploring some of the other interesting art museums including Lee Ufan Museum, Chichu Art Museum, and the Art House Project.
