Japan has a long history of traditional sword making. Known as katana in Japan, samurai swords have been made by hand since the 10th century, with an emphasis on strength, quality, and finesse. Japan’s warrior class, the samurai were famous for their swordsmanship and followed a strict code of honour in how they used katana. Over time, other weapons emerged, and swords fell out of favour and there are now only around 150 traditional swordsmiths left to keep the katana craft alive. This experience is a chance to learn more about the history and philosophy of sword making, as well as watching a master swordsmith demonstrate his skills. The swordsmith will recreate a style of sword from the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), by smelting iron from recovered objects from that time. You will see how layers of steel with differing carbon concentrates are welded together to give the sword both strength and flexibility. Following this process, the swordsmith skilfully adds a curve before polishing the sword. A hands-on experience, you then get the chance to try some of the sword making techniques for yourself.

Please note that while the swordsmith does not speak English, a translator will be on hand to interpret.
