In the remote countryside of southern Iceland, the Torfhus Retreat blends seamlessly into the landscape with its turf roofs and locally-sourced stone. Built using natural materials, this sustainable property is powered solely by geothermal and hydroelectric energy, with a focus on leaving as minimal an impact as possible.
There are 10 stand-alone Torfhus, each with two bedrooms, a spacious living room and a fully-equipped kitchenette. Sleeping up to four guests, these are ideal options for families or groups of friends travelling together. Outside, each of the Torfhus has its own private plunge pool, constructed with columnar basalt and geothermally heated. In addition to the turf houses, Torfhus Retreat has 15 Torfbaer, individual suites housed in sets of three, which share a larger geothermally heated plunge pool.
The Torfhus and Torfbaer are centred around the Langhus, inspired by the Viking long houses of the past. Here, guests will find the reception and dining room, complete with endless views across the surrounding countryside. Dinner is a unique experience, full of theatre and with no menu - the chef will prepare bespoke meals using seasonal produce according to your preferences.
Thanks to its remote location, Torfhus Retreat is perfectly placed for spotting the Northern Lights during the winter, if the weather conditions are on your side. The property is also well located for visiting some of Iceland's key sights, including Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir National Park in the Golden Circle.
