Minas Gerais is a year round destination, but generally hotter, with heavier rain and higher humidity from November to March. Autumn/winter (May to September) is drier, but it gets much colder here than in neighbouring states, with temperatures sometimes dropping to 5C. April, May and June are the best months, when everything is green but it's drier with cool evenings.

Solar da Ponte is an exquisitely restored colonial house set within peaceful gardens in the historical, 18th century Brazilian mountain village of Tiradentes, with quaint winding streets and beautiful Baroque churches.

Solar da Ponte is owned by a British couple, John and Anna Maria Parsons, who fell in love with Tiradentes and whose aim it is to create a unique and hospitable experience in the Mineira tradition. The colonial-style architecture creates a comfortable environment, and the spacious interiors feature light colour schemes complemented by traditional décor and locally made furniture.

The hotel features 18 guest rooms in total. All are spacious and furnished with antiques. Take a stroll around the historic centre of the town and admire the local artworks on display and the variety of handicrafts. The native tropical forests are stunning, and the imposing Sao Jose Mountain Range, now an ecological reserve, creates an awe-inspiring backdrop. Excursions to the countryside, visits to fazendas and preservation areas, on foot, horse-back, by 4x4 or bicycle can all be arranged.

Solar da Ponte has 18 guest rooms, divided into Standard, Superior and Massimo Suite categories. The rooms are elegantly furnished, with wooden beds, Egyptian cotton linens, local artworks and antiques. The Standard Rooms overlook the stone bridge leading into the village whilst most of the Superior Rooms overlook the gardens. The spacious Massimo Suites overlook a private garden. All the rooms have cable television, internet connectin (for an extra charge) and minibar.

Children aged over 8 years old are welcome at Solar da Ponte. Extra beds can be provided on request and one of the rooms sleeps up to four guests. Although there are no specific facilities for children they can enjoy the pool and playing in the garden, with its visiting marmosets.

Solar da Ponte has a pretty walled garden with a spacious swimming pool. There are also cosy sitting areas, both inside and out, a sauna, bar and homely dining area where breakfast, light snacks and afternoon tea are served. Although there is no proper lunch or dinner service there are many good restaurants within walking distance. Massages can also be arranged on request.

Solar da Ponte is ideally located for strolling amongst the streets of the picturesque village of Tiradentes, with its many churches, galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants. It is also a good area for hiking, riding and mountain biking, and visiting local villages and fazendas or taking the scenic train from São João del Rey.

A charming place by the old stone bridge before the village proper. In the evening light the Solar looks like an old English coaching inn - the cobbled paths, the trickling brook, the horses moored on the green outside - so that you half expect to see Tristram Shandy or Moll Flanders in the visitors' book... Tiradentes is a cracking place for a saunter, a shop, an ogle at architecture, an outside drink and a pretty good meal. The cobbled squares and streets are not car- or stiletto-friendly, so it's a perfect place for wandering; or being driven around in a horse-draw buggy; or hiring a pony - the breed hereabouts is extremely fine - and cantering around the surrounding lanes and lush pastures...
