The Garden Route offers visitors a Mediterranean climate, with moderately hot summers and mild to chilly winters. As one of the richest rainfall areas in South Africa, the Garden Route remains lush and green all year-round. Summer is from November to March with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C, especially from December to February. From April, temperatures begin to fall again, with evenings being much colder. From June to December, the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) graces Walker Bay with its massive presence.

Insider's View

I just returned from doing a similar trip. Beautiful coastline with friendly properties and an awesome road-trip!

We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. To start planning your vacation

Delve into the culture of one of the world’s most iconic and strikingly beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town. Indulge in mouth-watering cuisine and delectable wines in the abundant vineyards of Franschhoek. Embark on a road trip along the semi-desert landscape of Route 62 and through the everchanging scenery of the Garden Route, ending on a truly special ‘Big Five’ safari in the Eastern Cape.

  1. Fly to Cape Town

  2. Days 1-4: Cape Town & the Western Cape

Upon arrival in Cape Town you will be met by a representative with your name on a board, and they will fast track you through the airport so you can collect your car rental. As you drive into Cape Town, you’ll see Table Mountain towering over the city bowl, and catch a glimpse of the glistening azure water of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. You will head to the Trevoyan Guesthouse, situated on a pretty residential tree-lined street, with a backdrop of Table Mountain, which will be your base for the next 3 nights. Take the cable car up to Table Mountain and feel your excitement build as you edge closer and closer to the top. Contemplate the extraordinary view over the rugged coastline of the Cape and the historic Waterfront, with a glass of wine in hand. As your day comes towards a close head back down into the city to Kloof Street, which is just around the corner from your guesthouse. Kloof Street presents some of Cape Town’s most renowned restaurants; we recommend Kloof Street House, which is bursting with character and energy. Enjoy a mouth-watering meal in the snug courtyard and unwind.

The next couple of days you can really take your time getting to know Cape Town. Hop on a ferry to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site Robben Island, and visit the cell in which Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Wind your way through the dramatic coastal roads of the cape, stopping off at penguin colonies and sleepy sea harbor towns. Spend an evening watching the bronzed glow of the sun setting over Camps Bay.

Accommodation: The Trevoyan Guesthouse (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Franschhoek

Now for a change of scenery. After breakfast drive out the city and into the Winelands, passing lush green mountains dotted with plum orchards and abundant vineyards. Head into the intimate village of Franschhoek, encased by sweeping valleys. Settle in to Avondrood Guest House, located on a tranquil road just a few minutes from the center of the village. Stroll into the village and indulge your senses on the wine tram; hop on and hop off at South Africa’s best vineyards and get hooked on world class wine, enjoy a gourmet picnic of local cheeses and charcuterie with a bottle of sparkling wine on the vineyards of Mont Rochelle before hopping back on the tram and on to your next stop. The following day cycle through the hills surrounding Franschhoek and enjoy an al fresco lunch at Le Petite Ferme, soaking up the idyllic surroundings.

Accommodation: Avondrood Guest House (2 nights)

  4. Days 6-7: Eastern Cape

What you’ll notice as you begin your road trip through South Africa, is the everchanging landscapes and micro-climates. This route is no exception as you drive out of the lush Winelands and join Route 62, passing semi-desert landscapes and driving under towering rock formations. On your way to Outdtshoorn, break up the journey with a stop in the sleepy village of Barrydale and recharge at Diesel and Crème, an eccentric vintage diner and enjoy one of their famous milkshakes.

You will spend the night in Oudtshoorn where you will be based at La Plume Guest House. Venture out this afternoon exploring the Cango Caves and ostrich farms. If you are keen to see the meerkats, we recommend a very early start the next morning so you can sit and wait in anticipation as these adorable meerkats appear from their burrows.

Accommodation: La Plume Guest House (1 night)

  5. Days 7-10: Garden Route

Today you will officially begin journeying through the Garden Route. Driving through the wide, open roads with the Tsitsikamma Mountains one side and the azure ocean on the other side. Heading east you will pass through the town of Knysna, surrounded by a glistening lagoon and rich forests. This is a lovely spot for a seafood lunch before heading into Plettenberg Bay, where you’ll see vast white stretches of beach and pods of dolphins jumping between waves.

Your base for the next 3 nights is Hog Hollow Country Lodge, located 20 minutes inland from the coast, in the indigenous forests surrounding the bay. This is a playground for adventure seekers; kayak up the majestic Storms River, gazing up in awe at the bat caves and jagged cliffs surrounding you. Give your arms a break from kayaking and hop onto a lilo, floating further up the river and sink into the serene silence that surrounds you. Canter through meadows and indigenous forest on horseback. Stand up paddleboard on the Keurbooms River taking in the beauty of nature in peace. The choice is yours.

Accommodation: Hog Hollow Country Lodge (3 nights)

  6. Days 10-13: Eastern Cape Game Reserves

Your safari awaits you. After an early morning breakfast, continue driving east into Port Elizabeth into Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Follow the track through the reserve, which is encased with rolling hills and valleys, coming across wildlife along the way. Herds of elephants are particularly prevalent. You will spend 3 nights at Kariega River Lodge, located along the banks of the Bushman’s River, this safari lodge provides a one-off experience in the way it connects a ‘Big Five’ game reserve to the sea. With this unique location, there is more to a safari here than just game drives; gain a whole new perspective as you canoe down the Bushmans River and watch in blissful silence as the vibrantly colored river birds sweep down to drink. Drift down the river onboard a boat and get up close to a pod of hippos, submerged in the water to escape the heat of the sun. Engage all your senses as you venture out on a walking safari and fully immerse yourself in the bush. Let your excitement wander.

Accommodation: Kariega River Lodge (3 nights)

  7. Fly Home

Today after a final morning game drive and breakfast, you will drive to Port Elizabeth Airport to drop off your car rental and check in for your flight back to London via Johannesburg.
