Inkaterra Machu Picchu is located in an enchanting five-hectare cloud forest garden alongside the Vilcanota River and on the edge of the village of Aguas Calientes. A great base from which to visit the awe-inspiring ruins and lost city of Machu Picchu.
Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel has a beautiful location in a private mountainside refuge deep in the lush Andean cloud forest, outside the town of Aguas Calientes. The key attraction is of course the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu which is easy to access from here, but the natural beauty of the cloud forest is a real highlight.
The 83 rooms are very cosy and are furnished with regional timber, California long beds with hand-woven alpaca bedspreads and handmade amenities and aromatherapy products. Butler-attended villas are also available with private gardens and open-air showers. A special feature of the hotel is the Andean sauna, an igloo made from indigenous bamboo and fresh eucalyptus leaves. The spa also offers various treatments including massages, reflexology and Andean hot stone therapy.
The reserve on which the hotel sits is home to the world’s largest collection of native orchids, some 372 to be precise, as well as an impressive concentration of birds, hummingbirds and butterflies. Guided walks offer a fascinating insight into the flora and fauna here. Inkaterra Machu Picchu is also a huge supporter of sustainable tourism, helping to preserve thousands of acres of prime Amazonian rainforest.
Meals are served in the impressive glass-walled restaurant overlooking the mountains and Urubamba river and afternoon tea is served daily in the cafe, ideal after a day's explorations of Machu Picchu. There is free WiFi internet in the cafe and the suites.
83 guest rooms built in the typical ‘Andean village’ style. Several rooms and suites have balconies, terraces and fireplaces.
Children are welcomed here, and cribs, high chairs and special children's menus are available, as well as a babysitting service. There are child-friendly excursions too, accompanied by friendly local guides, ideal for children aged 6 upwards.

Originally a plantation growing coffee, tea and tropical fruits, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo was created in the 70s. At the bottom of the UNESCO site of Machu Picchu and a few minutes walk from the heart of Machu Picchu Pueblo, Inkterra has the feel of a village with its colonial style whitewashed and tiled building set within cloud forest alongside the rushing Urubamba river and surrounded by mountains. Its a tropical haven away from the bustle of one of Perus key attractions and once youve explored Machu Picchu its a joy to return to the hotel, to immerse yourself in the forest, watch the hummingbirds at their feeders, book a massage, Andean sauna or sit in the outdoor pond (two of which are heated). With 12 acres of grounds, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo offers its guests excursions into the forest: early morning bird watching, a visit to the tea plantation, an orchid trail and twilight walks to learn about local myths and legends.

Although no hotel in the area can compete with the Sanctuary Lodge for location, this is easily the most attractive accommodation option for visiting Machu Picchu. I loved strolling along the paths through the cloudforest and stopping to watch the endless flittings of hummingbirds and butterflies. Rooms are very spacious, and the junior suites have great roaring fires. If you want to relax a bit more while in Peru, it's well worth considering an extra night here, as it's easy to see Machu Picchu more than once, and you can also walk along some of the trails from the lodge down to Indian petroglyphs or their Spectacled Bear project. It's also a great option for families.
