Insider's View

Big Sur has a shortage of family-friendly options and Treebones is characterful and fun. Their yurts make a great two-night stop for adventurous and relaxed families and couples traveling through Big Sur.

For ‘glamping’ on the Big Sur coast there is no better spot than Treebones. Nestled between Los Padres Forest and the Pacific Ocean, Treebones has sixteen comfortable yurts that provide a restful canopy under the stars.

Treebones stays true to the region’s hippie roots. The yurts come complete with redwood decks with Pacific Ocean views of varying extents, some with king beds for couples and others with two queen beds and sofa-beds that are perfect for families. Yurts come complete with sink vanities but restrooms and hot showers are located a short stroll away next to the main lodge. There's a heated swimming pool and hot-tub built up on the bluff. The Wild Coast restaurant serves fresh farm-to-table food at lunch and dinner, while the Sushi Bar (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) serves a Chef's Choice menu with unbelievable sunset views. Reservations for the Sushi Bar should be made well in advance, whereas bookings at the Main Restaurant can be made upon arrival.

Treebones kitchen uses only organic, sustainable and natural foods, creatively crafted from locally grown ingredients and their own garden. In the mornings, there's a make your own waffle breakfast served in the lodge that sets you up for a days hiking in the redwoods at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or exploring the coves on the phenomenal crescent-shaped beaches. With a terrace that overlooks the Pacific, and a small deli-shop stocking snacks, cold beers and sodas, Treebones is the perfect spot to come back and rest your head after a day exploring the Big Sur coast.

By day guests can hike through redwood forests, kayak in the marine sanctuary, read a book on their private deck or indulge in an in-yurt massage.

Please note that there is wi-fi in the main lodge, but no mobile phone service due to the remote location.

Despite beautiful beaches and family friendly activities, Big Sur has a surprising shortage of quality family lodgings. Treebones offers a unique, fun and comfortable base for families and is our favorite recommendation - booking early is recommended. Due to the 'glamping' set-up, Treebones is not suitable for very young children and does not accept children under six years of age.

Chef Tim Hrusa heads up the Wild Coast Restaurant, each dish boasts fresh local flavor with ingredients grown & harvested from their own organic garden, sometimes just hours before appearing on your plate. Guests can prepare their complementary waffle breakfast in the restaurant, and enjoy them with ocean views. Sushi Chef Carlos-san prepares fresh, innovative sushi at the outdoor sushi bar with sunset dining.

Big Sur is endless craggy, unspoiled coastline that has long been a retreat for writers and artists, from Henry Miller to Ferlinghetti. Today Big Sur still attracts artists and new-age hippies, as well as city slickers and adventurous families looking to unplug and get away. Apart from appreciating its beauty and endless beaches, guests can enjoy hiking and nature in Pfeiffer State Park, horse riding, and exploring jade coves to spot seals, otters and dolphins.

  • Monterey Aquarium - The US #1

Monterey's aquarium is located on the former site of a sardine cannery; much more than a collection of glass tanks, 200 gallons of seawater provide homes to sea life from kid-tolerant starfish to friendly penguins, sea turtles and hammerhead sharks.
