The new owners have transformed what was an ugly old grub of a hotel into a cool coastal butterfly. Getting here involves an hour's flight from Johannesburg to Maputo, followed by a thrilling 30-minute transfer by private helicopter to Ponta Mamoli, set in a cove at the end of an endless, empty beach. It has been an instant hit with South Africans, who tend to drive the 25km from the Kosi Bay border post in KwaZulu-Natal rather than chopper in, and it will be just as popular with an international crowd looking for a post-safari beach vacation. The resort has 22 cabins built on stilts on a steep hill and connected by wooden walkways. The interiors are polished, with clean lines and contemporary furniture; each cabin has a generous terrace with an outdoor shower and private plunge pool (leaving plenty of room to play in the two public ones). The beach bar delivers music, cocktails and Portuguese-inspired snacks such as peri-peri prawns; the restaurant produces inspired seafood dishes. Underwater explorers are well catered for at the dive center, and everyone flocks to see humpback whales, whale sharks, manta rays and turtles. Resident dolphins seem to hang around waiting for someone to swim with them and the cherry on the eco-cake is watching loggerhead and leatherback turtles lay their eggs on the beach at night.
When to go Anytime: it's warm and dry in winter; hot and steamy in summer (November-March); turtle egg-laying is November to February; whale-watching is August to November.
