Luxury Skiing Vacations FAQs

  • When is the best time to go on a luxury ski vacation?

The best time to go skiing depends on the place. Most of the European Alps are covered with a layer of crisp, white snow between December and April.

December is great for families because you can get into the festive spirit ahead of the 25th. Many ski resorts offer excellent snow conditions at this time of year, but you'll get slightly less time on the pistes as the days are shorter during the depths of winter.

February – especially half-term for families looking for a luxury ski vacation – is slightly warmer than December. The combination of longer days and milder weather makes it one of the best times to hit the slopes.

March and April usually welcome strong sunshine and deep snow, making it wonderful for winter sports. With temperatures remaining stable, you can sit outside for a sundowner as you kick off the après ski with a Hot Toddy or Liqueur des Aravis.

When you plan your trip, our travel experts will delve into your requirements and what you're looking for. They'll be able to advise you on where, when and how to travel. That's the beauty of calling on us as your travel experts.

  • Is snow guaranteed?

Unfortunately, we can't guarantee the time and place you choose will have snow. But we have carefully picked all our ski resorts and only feature those that we know, from experience, have reliable snow records.

  • How long should I go for?

We'd recommend going skiing for seven to 10 days, although you can go for as long as you like. Most people have scratched the itch after a week or so of solid skiing, though.

  • Can I go on a luxury skiing vacation and not ski?

If you'd rather not take to the slopes this year, there are plenty of other activities you can do instead. As well as other winter sports (like snowboarding), you can go on a bracing adventure through the peaks on a Nordic walking tour, traverse the quaint streets of the resort or simply relax at your hotel or chalet. Sitting by a cozy fire, nestled in a blanket, watching the world go by as you soak up the wonderful view of the slopes, all before rounding off the day with a sundowner at the apres ski.

Most of our hand-picked hotels have spa facilities with a particular focus on wellness and rejuvenation too. Make the most of your five-star hotel – even if you don't want to ski – and head to the hot tub or sauna. Soak away the tension before plunging in ice-cold water or let the world-leading massage therapists gently ease muscle stiffness or soreness.

  • What do I wear?

Howling blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and gargantuan snow drifts mean your usual winter wardrobe simply won't do. Luckily, our expert Bruce, Ski Destination Manager at Scott Dunn explains:

"For your ski vacation, you'll want to start by packing some base layers. They should sit next to your skin and they're designed to keep you dry – but not warm. You'll be working up a sweat on the slopes, so you'll need a couple of tops. If possible, lightweight merino wool or man-made fibre is best.

"Once you've got your base layers, you'll want some toasty outer layers. A warm ski jacket is a must – as are salopettes, which will stay up easily and are less likely to let in the snow than trousers.

"Then you'll need a collection of jumpers, fleeces, ski gloves, hats and socks."

It's also important to remember some everyday clothes. Most of our five-star hotels exude relaxed elegance, so there aren't strict dress codes. We'll let you know if your chosen hotel has evening dress requirements, so there won't be any nasty surprises.

  • How do I plan my luxury skiing vacation?

If you want a luxurious ski trip that you'll talk about for years to come, you're in the right place. Whether you're looking for a fun-filled family vacation, a romantic trip or an exhilarating ski break for a group of friends, we'll do the meticulous planning so you don't have to.

All you need to do is tell us what your dream vacation looks like. What do you want to do? Where do you want to stay? What excursions get your pulse racing? Then leave the rest to us – we'll put together a trip that delights on all fronts.
