The climate of Madhya Pradesh can be labelled tropical and monsoonal. Seasonal variations occur mainly in the form of three distinct seasons - summer, winter and monsoon.

Summer runs from April until June with temperatures reaching over 40°C during the day, while early mornings and evenings are pleasant, around 18-24°C. Rainfall is heavy in the monsoon season which lasts from mid-June until September. Winters are pleasant and the best time to travel is from October to March when game viewing in the national parks is at its best.

Please note the national parks in this region are closed during the monsoon season, from July until October.

To start planning your vacation to Forsyth's Lodge

Forsyth Lodge is a small wildlife lodge with just 12 cottages set in 44 acres of reclaimed jungle on the edge of the Satpura Tiger Reserve. Built using traditional mud and cob methods, and with an emphasis on sustainable wildlife and wilderness experience

Forsyth Estate offers an intimate and authentic wildlife experience in and around Satpura National Park. Its focus on a sustainable wildlife and wilderness experience is reflected in the lodge as well as activities offered.

There are just twelve cottages at Forsyth's Lodge, all made in the traditional mud and cow dung method and in clusters of 3 cottages designed to privacy and views across the 44 acre meadow grounds of the park’s buffer zone. The cottage interiors are charming, decorated with traditional Parsi furniture and colorful rugs, with stylised and simple wildlife murals daubed on the walls. There is an eco-friendly swimming pool (with virtually no chlorine), and waste water from the lodge is recycled into reed pools around the grounds which encourages wildlife and so wild boar and jungle cat sightings are often made from the central lodge.

The central lodge is an ideal set up for the sociable where everyone congregates after safari drives in the evening for drinks on the roof terrace around a firepit, to stargaze and exchange stories. There is a dining room for communal meals and a lounge where naturalist briefings take place. The community initiatives include local ladies giving traditional cooking demonstrations.

Dining is an informal affair at Forsyth's Lodge and guests have the freedom to dine in various spots around the property. Mostly Indian food is served, and lunch is often specially prepared by local village woman in traditional clay pots.

Satpura National park is a dramatic landscape of sandstone peaks, ravines, narrow gorges and dense forests of sal, teak and bamboo, it is accessed across the Tawa Reservoir, and many river inlets weave into the park. An exhilarating safari is by night in the buffer zone, which tracks nocturnal animals. It’s a birder’s paradise as Satpura has about 350 species of birds, although large mammals such as Sloth Bear, Leopard, Dholes/wild dogs/India Giant Squirrel/ Rusty Spotted car and the gaur or Indian Bison. The naturalists are enthusiastic and keen to impart their knowledge so children can learn scouting skills such as how to use a telescope and binoculars, and learn about wildlife as part of the Jr. Ranger Program.

I really loved my time at Forsyth Lodge, the whole experience was really welcoming from the sun downers on the roof terrace to dining together. The wholesome and traditional Indian curries were delicious. The cottages were comfortable and their spacing maximized privacy and the lodge was peaceful and sensitive to its natural surroundings.

The wildlife experience was also fun and informative, as the naturalists were extremely enthusiastic and ready to impart their knowledge. I learned to identify alarm calls and track the sounds in the jungle, to lead us to sightings which was exciting! I would recommend Forsyth Lodge to wildlife enthusiasts looking for a rich experience and families as children are entertained by the Junior Ranger Programme, and encouraged to engage with and learn from their environment.
