Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

This itinerary is best from December to April so can be enjoyed to the maximum during the school vacations. Costa Rica experiences rainfall throughout the year due to its tropical climate, but the summer months (June - August) are classified as the green season where afternoon rains can be expected. That's not to say it's not a good time to travel - the extra rain means the landscapes are extra lush but the rain can be particularly strong during September and October.

  2. Days 1-3: San Jose and Central Valley

Arrive in Costa Rica and begin your trip in the beautiful and lush Central Valley, the perfect place to unwind after a flight. Wake up to birdsong, wander the grounds and explore the nearby nature trails. You may like to head to Poas Volcano National Park where you can look down into the bubbling inner crater, hike to the La Paz waterfalls through cloud forest, visit a local coffee plantation or simply spend time relaxing beside the pool.

Accommodation: Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Resort (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Tortuguero

From the Central Valley you head east across the Continental Divide down to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Tortuguero is best known as one of the most important egg-laying places for Green Turtles from July to December nevertheless it teams with wildlife year-round. Surround yourself in jungle and keep your eyes peeled for the various monkey species, sloths, reptiles, amphibians and numerous tropical birds. Board a boat on the neighboring canals and waterways and embark on day and night hikes with specialist naturalist guides, who will impart their expert knowledge of Tortuguero’s wonderful flora and fauna. In turtle laying and hatching seasons, nests are carefully monitored, but guests can visit with the National Park guides.

    Accommodation: Tortuga Lodge (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Arenal

Leave Tortuguero by boat and continue by private transfer back on dry land to the town of La Fortuna, the gateway to the iconic Arenal Volcano. This is a great base for activity lovers of all ages as there is so much to do, from canopy walks and ziplining to horse riding, white-water rafting, quad biking and waterfall hikes, all in the sight of the majestic volcano. We’ve included a canopy walk on hanging bridges to take you up with the birds and also a sloth tour bringing you face to face with some of Costa Rica’s funniest creatures.

    Accommodation: Nayara Gardens (3 nights)

From Arenal head west to Papagayo Bay on the Guanacaste coast for a pampering stay. Here you can do as much or as little as you’d like. If your thirst for adventure has not already been quenched, you can go snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, white water rafting, tubing, zip-wiring between the forest canopies or hiking on volcanic slopes in Rincón de la Vieja National Park. Alternatively, just sit back, soak in the views and relax on the beach or by the pool.
