To start planning your holiday to Mihingo Lodge
Mihingo Lodge has just ten rooms and commands a peaceful location adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park. It makes for a great destination to spend a couple of nights en route from Kampala to Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi.
Mihingo Lodge has been built entirely using local materials, incorporating the large rocky boulders on the site and decorated with local Ugandan artefacts. It has been thoughtfully designed by the German owner and consists of ten luxury tented rooms on wooden platforms covered by a thatched roof. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, a flush loo and a veranda. There is also a thatched dining area and an infinity swimming pool with fantastic views over Lake Mburo National Park as well as a tennis court.
Lake Mburo is home to many different animal species, including zebra, waterbuck, warthog, and impala. Additionally, Lake Mburo has big numbers of waterbuck, topi, buffalo, hippo and if you are lucky you will see leopard, eland and crocodiles. Aside from lounging by the pool, enjoying the sounds of nature, or watching nearby wildlife, guests can also enjoy boat trips on Lake Mburo, forest and savannah walks, game drives in Lake Mburo National Park, horse riding (catering for all abilities) and night game drives.
In appreciation of its fragile surroundings, Mihingo Lodge is an environmentally friendly lodge and the buildings are constructed in such a way as to melt into the rocky outcrops and savannah landscape around them. Electricity, hot water, and water pumps are powered by solar energy and there is a natural water catchment system to take advantage of the rains.
Mihingo Lodge has 10 tented rooms which are built on wooden platforms with stilts, covered by a thatched roof. All are equipped with en-suite bathrooms with stunning views, including hot and cold running water, showers, and flush loos.
Each luxury tented room is nestled on a private piece of the lodge's property, enabling guests to enjoy the tranquil environment in complete seclusion.
Although there are no specific child care facilities available, children of all ages are most welcome to come and stay at Mihingo Lodge. Food and meal times can be adjusted to suit younger guests and babysitting can be arranged for those that require it.
The main dining area is a large thatched structure built of rocks, the wood of dead weathered olive trees found on the land, and native grasses. Below the dining area, an infinity swimming pool stretches out from the rocks and seems to disappear into the vast landscape beyond. There is also a tennis court as well as a hide for guests to enjoy.
There are lovely games drives and guided walks within Lake Mburo National Park with some spectacular views. Boat trips on Lake Mburo have to be booked in advance. TThe trip takes approximately 2 hours, and guests always see Hippo and Crocs and many bird species and with a lot of luck you might even see a leopard from the boat. The lodge also offers horse back safaris in the valleys towards Lake Kacheera just outside Lake Mburo National Park.
This is perfect if you want low-impact, but not at the expense of luxury. Designed to blend in with its fragile surroundings, this opulent lodge is powered by solar energy and provides educational resources for local schools. Spend your days lazing by the infinity pool watching wildlife at the nearby watering hole and nights in your tented room in the forest or overlooking the lake. It's just one of several community-run lodges in Uganda, and can be combined with a stay at Ngamba Island camp which doubles as a chimp sanctuary, and Nidali, which offers trekking in the Kibale Forest.
