Golf courses in the Algarve
The Algarve is renowned for its excellent golf courses. Here’s where we would choose to tee-off from:
18 Holes (additional 9 due to open this summer); Par 71; Handicap 28/36
Palmares is considered to be one of the most scenic golf courses in the Algarve with breath taking views over the Atlantic Ocean. The setting is idyllic, with the majority of the holes on gentle slopes above the extensive Meia Praia stretching from the Lagos marina to the Alvor estuary.
Course architect, Frank Pennink, took full advantage of the magnificent site but new architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. has recently transformed the site into one of the best golf courses in the Algarve. The new nine holes opened this summer, the fairways are not clustered with villas so makes play feel very open and refreshing.

The Oceânico Old Course, Vilamoura
18 Holes; Par 73; Handicap 24/28
Situated in the heart of the Vilamoura resort a mere 20-minute drive from Faro airport, this Frank Pennink designed parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world.
Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pinetrees, the principal hazard, and over gently undulating natural terrain. Although it opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised 27 years later although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.

Monte Rei, Tavira
18 Holes; Par 72; Handicap 24/32
The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, Monte Rei North opened for play in June 2007. The course is set in the picturesque foothills of the eastern Algarve with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The design of the course is truly unique, with water coming into play on the eleventh and eighteenth hole. Fairways and greens are boarded by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees; all of which add drama to the landscape.
Facilities include Golf Academy, driving range, two putting areas, two short practice areas, pro shop, restaurant and bar.
