  • Take part in one of the most authentic treks in Peru (also known as the Weaver's Trail) passing indigenous Andean villages.

  • Offering a great alternative to the extremely busy Inca Trail, the Lares Adventure goes completely off the beaten track and the region has changed little over the last 500 years.

  • Permits are not currently required for the Lares Adventure (unlike the Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek).

  • The treks are in small groups to ensure the best possible service and intimate trekking experience. Get to know your trekking mates who may become friends for life!

Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

May to November is the best time to go trekking in the Sacred Valley. The rainy season is typically from December to March. The lodge to lodge trek closes in January and February as these months receive the heaviest rainfall.

Weather in the region is extremely variable and you should pack for a variety of conditions. During a sunny day you can expect temperatures of about 65–80°F (18–27°C), however on the pass the weather is very unpredictable and temperatures can drop to 30°F (0°C) during the day (but you won’t spend a lot of time up there).

The zone of Machu Picchu has a humid and warmer climate since it is located at a lower altitude on the east side of Andes. The average temperatures at Machu Picchu are between 73°F and 77°F (23°C to 25°C), with the minimum temperature around 64°F (18°C). The region of Cuzco has only two seasons: a wet season and a dry season. The wet season starts in November and ends in March. During this time, it rains almost every day for three or four hours, but also there are several sunny days. The dry season begins around March and lasts until October. June and July are the coldest months. Paradoxically at noon the temperatures can reach 77°F (23 °C), the annual highest temperature.

The Lares Adventure is a spectacular lodge to lodge trek by Mountain Lodges of Peru. Hike the remote Lares region of the Sacred Valley experiencing breathtaking scenery and passing indigenous weaving communities culminating with a visit to Machu Picchu.

The Mountain Lodges of Peru Lares Adventure offers a fabulous 4 night itinerary through the Lares Valley in the Sacred Valley of the Incas outside of Cuzco.

Comfortable mountain lodges serve as deluxe “basecamps” for daily hikes bringing you to remote passes with views of a panorama of waterfalls, snow peaks, and turquoise glacial lakes, with the occasional condor soaring above, and to tiny Andean highland communities unchanged for centuries, where you can meet local weavers and farmers and get a glimpse of the distant past.

The trek offers unique adventures, ideal for a variety of hiking levels and abilities. At the end of the day, relax in a comfortable lodge with wonderful amenities —it’s the best of both worlds! Expert guides travel with the group for the entire journey and share their knowledge of natural history, culture, and local traditions.

The trek includes exploration of the breathtaking Inca sites of Pisac, with its remarkable stone structures, Ollantaytambo, where the rebel Inca leader Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in battle, and incomparable Machu Picchu, the crowning glory of the Incas and the archaeological wonder of all South America. Cross high Andean pastures and rocky passes, walk along Inca staircases and through cloudforest in the shadow of snow-capped peaks, and have the opportunity to see a wide range of wildlife, from hummingbirds to condors.

Groups are small, with a maximum of 12 participants, with a highly experienced team of guides and porters to carry your luggage, so that you can enjoy each moment fully. At the end of each day’s walking, relax in comfort at your lodge. Comfortable ensuite rooms await, as well as excellent cooking using fresh local ingredients.

Walking is in part at quite a high altitude, and we would strongly recommended acclimatisation in Cuzco beforehand. Although the walking is generally not too strenuous, with typically around 4-6 hours a day, participants should be prepared for the hiking over 14,000 feet.

In summary, the Lares Adventure is a privileged opportunity to delve more deeply into a Peru that has retained its identity, and that allows you to reach the ultimate goal of Machu Picchu without the tourist hordes.
