Location
Amara Mountain Resort is located in the hill station of Kalaw, about 15 minutes from the centre of town.
Amara Mountain Resort is a colonial boutique hotel located in Kalaw in Burma's Shan State. It features just ten rooms in two separate buildings and is a great base for a visit to the Green Hill Elephant Camp or exploring the Shan Hills.
Colonial boutique hotel in the hill station of Kalaw
Perfect base from which to take day treks into the mountains
Close to the Green Elephant Camp
Nice terrace for al fresco dinner on warmer evenings
Amara Mountain Resort was originally built in 1909 in a mock-tudor style in a pine forest above the hill station of Kalaw. In 2002, the old crumbling colonial building was lovingly renovated and another exact replica was built to add more rooms.
The rooms are large and decorated using local wood, four poster beds and open fireplaces which are lit in the winter. Don’t expect all the mod-cons such as TVs or WiFi that works perfectly, as Amara is best viewed as a suitable and comfortable base to explore the amazing walking trails you can embark on around Kalaw.
Amara has a restaurant which has an inviting terrace where you can eat al fresco if the weather is warm enough. The food offered is a mixture of regional and international dishes, and ingredients are sourced from their own herb and vegetable garden. There are lovely gardens to walk around in, and there is also a small spa.
When to visit
We felt that the rooms upstairs were a little quieter than those on the ground floor.
