The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.

Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

Itinerary

Day 1-4

Baa Atoll, Maldives

Days 1–4: Soneva Fushi – Jungle Hideaway in the Baa Atoll

Your immersive family adventure begins with a scenic seaplane flight to Soneva Fushi, tucked deep in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. On arrival, bicycles await — the island’s sandy jungle trails are best explored barefoot on two wheels. Teenagers will love the freedom of cycling from villa to beach to reef, before an evening paddleboard as the sun sets across the lagoon.

The following morning, plunge into the underwater world with a marine biologist-led snorkel safari on the house reef, spotting turtles, reef sharks and shoals of tropical fish. Conservation comes alive in the afternoon, as you take part in turtle monitoring and learn how the team are protecting fragile ecosystems.

Day 3 is all about discovery above and below the water. Start with an excursion to nearby local island of Namoona, learning all about the sustainability initiatives and the island’s efforts to Reduce, Recycle and Inspire local communities, Maalhos’ Eco Centro, the former waste burning area and water bottling plant. Enjoy local refreshments and learn to weave with screw pine leaves, a tradition unique to Maalhos. In the afternoon, head out by dhoni in search of dolphins leaping across the waves — a highlight for teenagers and adults alike.

On your final full day, get your adrenaline pumping with the Flying Sauces zipline, soaring through the lush jungle canopy. Later, unwind on the beach before a dazzling night of stargazing at the overwater observatory, guided by expert astronomers.

Accommodation: Soneva Fushi ( 3 nights )
Day 4-8

Noonu Atoll, Maldives

Days 5–8: Soneva Jani – Overwater Lagoon Paradise

After four nights in the jungle, journey by speedboat to Soneva Jani, where sweeping overwater villas come with slides plunging straight into the turquoise lagoon.

Your first evening sets the tone with Cinema Paradiso — a family film beneath the stars, with chefs preparing a gourmet dinner to enjoy.

The next days unfold with a mix of conservation and adrenaline. Snorkel pristine reefs with the marine team, who’ll teach you to identify species and understand the challenges facing coral ecosystems. Teens can try seabob rides, e-foiling or windsurfing lessons, while the whole family can kayak or paddleboard across the calm waters of the lagoon.

One day is reserved for a castaway sandbank picnic, whisking you away to a tiny desert island where you’ll snorkel, swim, and feast in blissful isolation. Another morning invites you to leave a legacy beneath the waves with a coral planting workshop, guided by Soneva’s marine biologists.

Evenings at Soneva Jani are nothing short of magical — from private dinners on your villa deck under a blanket of stars to an astronomy session at the Observatory, peering into distant galaxies through the largest telescope in the Indian Ocean.

Day 9: Departure

After a final sunrise swim off your villa’s deck, you’ll board a seaplane back to Malé. You’ll leave with memories of manta rays gliding in the Baa Atoll, the thrill of ziplining through the treetops, laughter on your villa’s waterslide, and the deep satisfaction of having connected with both nature and local culture as a family.

Accommodation: Soneva Jani ( 4 nights )
