Like the rest of Malaysia, Sabah’s climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January. At higher elevations the temperature is refreshingly cool, dropping to colder temperatures at night. Mount Kinabalu has its own climate and, above 3500m, temperatures can drop to freezing.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located in Sabah, is one of the most luxurious of the lodges found in Borneo. This rather special lodge offers an off the beaten track wildlife experience in the heart of the Danum Valley, surrounded by primary rainforest.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge is set beside the Danum River, tucked away amongst pristine primary rainforest. Within the surrounding area there are more than 275 species of bird and 110 species of mammal, including the pygmy elephant and wild orangutan, making this one of the best places for viewing Borneo's wildlife.
The accommodation at Borneo Rainforest Lodge is fairly basic but it is clean and comfortable. All of the rooms are en-suite and have overhead fans. Premium Chalets feel a bit more luxurious, and these also have small private pools. There are only 30 chalets in total, meaning each guest receives a tailored experience during their stay.
The lodge really does have the wow-factor in terms of location and experience, and given how remote it is, the facilities and standards here are of a perhaps surprisingly very high standard. Each of the 30 chalets at Borneo Rainforest Lodge have a private balcony, overhead fan and an en-suite bathroom with hot water. This is the kind of place that may only be a once in a lifetime experience! It really has the wow factor in terms of the lodge itself (bearing in mind it is about a 2-hour 30-minute drive away from the closest town) and the location is simply unique. The journey to get here is really telling of how far into the jungle you are going 2 hours along a bumpy track in the jungle and then you are pleasantly surprised to arrive at a lodge that couldnt be more civilised! Food is delicious and varied, cocktails are on offer and they even have a wine list. The staff are very efficient and it really feels like a 5* service. Rooms are clean and simple and comfortable, deluxe rooms have better views but the standard rooms are absolutely fine too. But of course, you are here for the experience! The guides really make your stay with their knowledge, wisdom, enthusiasm and passion. You can do varied jungle treks and canopy walks and they will point out things of interest, they really are very specialised and even use their sense of smell to discover animals; watching them is quite fascinating! They will even come and find you if something is spotted when you may be spending time at leisure. If the conditions are right, an afternoon tubing session is great fun and gives you another perspective of the jungle, although you may have a few bruises the next morning! You do have to come here though with the expectation that you wont see everything as sightings can be quite limited, but when you do see wild orang-utans for instance, it just makes it that much more special. You cant compare it to an African safari as you may spend a few hours trekking and not see much, but the place is so special this shouldnt matter. A stay here is quite pricey and the journey to get here is quite long but it is so so worth it, so if you can do it, you must.

A truly unique and totally natural experience, set far inside the jungle of Danum Valley. The lodge is beautifully maintained and has the most stunning views out into the jungle and of the river flowing below it. Its also the perfect spot for bird watchers as the kingfishers, hornbills and swifts are always nearby. The staff here are incredibly attentive and like to form close relationships with the guests, giving it a very friendly atmosphere indeed. Trekking and tubing are fantastic experiences; it always helps when your guide has such an extensive knowledge of the jungle, that you really do learn such a huge amount from even their simplest nature walks on the board walk. You can tailor make your itinerary here. If you have a burning desire to spend your days in bed and nights out in search of Borneos scariest spiders, thats exactly what you will do. They have specialist guides for the birdwatchers out there too. Personally, I loved their jungle treks during the day. The views are stunning and there is a huge sense of achievement when you reach the viewing point.

This was the highlight of the trip one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and that I will probably ever have. It was well organised, friendly, classy, stylish, simple, elegant there was a feel of magic in the lodge (where we spent most of our time) because everybody felt so lucky being there, witnessing some of the rarest animals in the world. We saw a huge long list of animals including the Orang Utans, monitor lizards, tarantulas, leeches etc! The best touch of all was our private guide, I dont know who I have to thank for that but it made the experience. The night walks and drives were once in a lifetime! 11/10

Danum Valley has earned the reputation for being one of the best places for viewing Borneo's wildlife and I can certainly see why. In the heart of this dense jungle valley lies the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, a basic and rustic international-standard lodge built beside the Danum River. The lodge boasts good facilities with basic comforts, making it the ideal based to explore the incredible diversity and complexity of the primeval Borneo rainforest. The central lodge is a large, airy building standing on columns of belian, Borneo's famous hardwood, and features a spacious verandah, dining area and well-stocked bar. During our stay we went on some amazing jungle walks, went bird watching with resident nature guides and my personal favourite - canopy walkways high above the jungle floor that give you a totally different perspective of the amazing rainforest all around!
Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Canopy Walk
An adventure along Borneo Rainforest Lodge's canopy walk is often one of the highlights of a stay here. This suspended walkway is 300 metres long, and reaches 26 metres high at its peak, offering a different perspective into the rainforest.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Night Safari
Hop into the back of an open-air truck for a night safari; a great time to see nocturnal primates such as the slow loris, flying red squirrel, samba deer, and civets. Your guide will use a strong torch to search for wildlife as you bump along the track.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Rainforest Trek
Accompanied by your expert guide, trek through the pristine primary rainforest of the Danum Valley. This is one of the oldest rainforests in the world, filled with wonderful wildlife, astonishing plants, tumbling waterfalls and mysterious rock pools.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge - “Coffin Cliff” Trek
Trek up to the “Coffin Cliff”, an ancient burial site of the Kadazandusun tribe, passing through picturesque rainforest and past waterfalls. You will also take in the best views of Danum Valley, and enjoy a refreshing dip in a natural Jacuzzi pool.
