Masoala Forest Lodge

Where the rainforest meets the sea, Masoala Forest Lodge is a unique, eco-friendly property comprised of seven treehouses on stilts, overlooking the Indian Ocean. After crossing the UNESCO World Heritage Site Antongil Bay, guests arrive by boat at this castaway paradise. Surrounded by a protected stretch of rainforest, Masoala is truly off-the-beaten-track.

Each treehouse offers unparalleled views of the sea across the rainforest canopy, and the chance to spot lemurs or birds perched in the trees. There are no exterior walls here, allowing natural light to flood the treehouses, while tents made from canvas and mesh provide guests with complete privacy. The tent interiors are practical but comfortable, with private en-suite facilities and a veranda complete with hammock.

Masoala has two communal areas, both also on stilts and open-plan. The beach house looks over the golden sands, providing uninterrupted sea views, and contains the dining area, lounge and bar. Further around the cove, the sea deck sits on the rocks above the ocean, with stunning panoramic views. Guests can take breakfast here, or enjoy sundowners in a comfortable hammock as the sun sets.

As Madagascar is home to a huge variety of unique species endemic to the island, it is no surprise that there is a wealth of wildlife in the rainforest surrounding Masoala. From the vibrant, red-ruffed lemur to the panther chameleon, there is always a new species waiting to be discovered on guided forest walks. Take to the waters of Antongil Bay in the search for green turtles and bottlenose dolphins, and look out for hump-backed whales in July and August. From Masoala it is possible to try your hand at fishing, snorkelling and even sea kayaking through the mangroves.
