  • Outdoor and indoor hot spring bathing

  • Remote rural location

Kawayu Onsen Fujiya Ryokan is an attractive and comfortable hotel in a remote rural setting. Enjoying a prime location on the banks of the Oto River, guests can enjoy a spot of natural hot springs bathing in the river itself, which is a marvellous way to refresh and revive tired muscles after a day hiking the ancient pilgrim trails of Kumano Kodo. In addition, there are both indoor and outdoor baths, the opportunity to reserve a private bath for couples bathing or for the ultimate luxury, guests can opt for a room with private outdoor bath overlooking the river. Owing to the remote location, the hotel provides a daily shuttle bus at 9am each morning to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.

There are 31 rooms offering both Japanese and Western-style accommodation. Japanese-style rooms have traditional futon bedding on tatami mats, while the Kumano Modern rooms and the Suite include twin Western-style beds and private outdoor bath. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom, flat-screen TV, fridge, hair dryer, balcony and river view. While the Japanese-style rooms are traditional, the Kumano Modern rooms enjoy a contemporary minimalist aesthetic, with elemental themes of bamboo, earth or wood.

With few dining options in the vicinity, Fujiya Ryokan offers half-board. Guests can request either a Japanese-style or Western breakfast and there is traditional multi-course Kaiseki dining of a high standard, served by helpful and attentive staff. The indoor and outdoor hot spring baths offer the option for private bathing at an additional charge, or guests can enjoy the natural hot springs in the river in front of the hotel. Additionally, both massage and table tennis are available but both incur an extra charge. For those wishing to relax in the midst of the Japanese countryside and explore the wonderful Kumano Kodo trails, Fujiya Ryokan provides a comfortable base.
