Each of the 17 rooms is modelled with beautiful clean lines and a paired back design using natural materials with a variety of textures to give a warm feel. The Japanese Premier rooms offer views over the garden and have a traditional layout with tatami mats, a beautiful terrace and private open air bath. Some of the rooms even come complete with hammocks. The Western Premier Rooms provide a similar layout but with beds off the floor on platforms and the Suites provide even more room with large living room and expansive terrace overlooking the gardens and town beyond.

Dining at Beniya Mukayu is as much as art form as it is delicious with Kaiseki dinners served in the main dining room, which feels halfway between a yoga studio and ancient temple with beautiful dark woods and simple beams running throughout the room. The Kaiseki dinner consists of nine courses which are all perfectly crafted to show off Kaga cuisine and the local seasonal produce at its best.

To further the indulgence there is a fantastic spa which offers treatments focussed on improving body and mind with products created by the owners in conjunction with a bio chemist. Every morning there is also complimentary yoga and there are two public baths to enjoy.

Further afield there are plenty of cultural sites to explore in Kanazawa which is an hour away by car with attractions such as the Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle Park and Higashi Chaya District to name a few.

We arrived in Yamishiro onsen in a total downpour but immediately on arrival at Beniya you felt warm and welcome. The large airy lobby has a Woodstove burning in one corner and stylish furniture to slump down on. Next came freshly pressed apple juice and everything seemed suddenly better. There are three categories of rooms, western, Japanese and zen suites. Having seen them all I'd really recommend the the zen suites as they have the perfect balance of traditional Japanese style and more western features. The living area has tatami mats whilst the bedroom has wooden floors and beds raised slightly higher than the traditional dional futon. The main event is the balcony that houses your private onsen which steams away constantly.

The hotel does definitely feel more like a hotel than a ryokan. There is no language barrier and everything works in much the same way as any other spa resort that I have stayed in. It's a great option for anyone not quite ready to throw themselves 100% into a ryokan but for some it might not deliver on what they were hoping. Personally I had the most relaxing and pampering stay and couldn't fault the experience. Dinner was incredible, a 10 course tasting menu focused on snow crab. We had dressed crab, raw crab, grilled crab amongst various other delicious courses. Amazing.

I fell completely in love with this property's design. There is such a close relationship between the building and nature with the raw concrete, woods, stones all providing a beautiful blend of textures and colours. All the public spaces are open plan leading onto each other and in the spa there is the most amazing sculpture using beads of water that I could have watched for hours! The rooms here follow suit in simple design which is so effective in providing a relaxed and meditative environment. This is truly somewhere that you can switch off 100% mesmerised by the surrounding beauty and tranquil atmosphere.
