Guatemala is best visited during the months of December to March, when the landscape is still green from the rainy season but the weather is warm and pleasant. April to September is rainy season, temperatures begin to drop and hiking can be difficult because of the terrain. October brings the hurricane season so we would advise to avoid Guatemala during this time. Religious ceremonies and festivals take part at Easter with the Semana Santa and May/June with Corpus Christi, so expect the city to be extremely busy during this time.
For Belize’s best weather, visit between the months of December to April. Expect warm weather and a great deal of sunshine as well as excellent snorkelling opportunities. Avoiding travel between June to October is recommended as daily heavy rainfall is common. Hurricanes are possible between August and October.

The first stop on your authentic itinerary is the picturesque colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala’s former capital that has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With an infectious charm you’ll spend the next few days wandering the cobbled streets with its pastel coloured buildings, exploring ruined churches and convents and perusing boutique shops for fantastic souvenirs such as ornately painted masks.
There’s an excellent array of restaurants and cafés, many of which are hidden away in ornate courtyards with beautifully tended tropical gardens or have rooftops where you can soak up the magnificent view, overshadowed by the three towering volcanoes on the horizon. You’ll also have the chance to visit surrounding rural villages, where the locals still dress in traditional outfits and follow ancient customs or for the more active there are those volcanoes waiting to be climbed!

As you cross over the border you’ll immediately feel the shift between Latin and Caribbean. Your first stop in Belize is the Cayo district, Belize’s premier adventure and eco-activity region. It’s a lush green area interwoven with bubbling rivers, cascading waterfalls and a series of cave networks waiting to be explored. There are also several Mayan temples, still shroud in dense vegetation, many of which only receive a handful or visitors on a daily basis, for you to discover.
Spend three days at the Hidden Valley Lodge, situated in Mountain Pine Ridge National Park and surrounded by a private nature reserve. Lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars and don’t forget your camera…with 90 miles of walking and biking trails for you to explore and plenty of activities including kayaking, ziplining caving, there’s lots to keep you busy for the next few days. Your final adventure begins when you board the boat on the New River for the spectacular journey across to the remotely located Lamanai Outpost Lodge. You will notice an abundance of wildlife (crocodiles bathing on the riverbank and birds flying overhead) and beautiful natural scenery as you travel along the calm river. At the halfway point of Shipyard, you may be greeted by the local Mennonite community.
The lodge overlooks a lagoon teeming with flora and fauna and is surrounded by forests, savannahs and vast wetlands all waiting to be explored by foot, boat and kayak. Just moments from the lodge you’ll also find the spectacular Lamanai Mayan ruins, making this the perfect setting to end this wonderful itinerary.
