Oslo
Oslo is undoubtedly one of Europe's most pleasant capitals; a sparkling and enchanting city edged by the undulating Oslofjord and the verdant, forested hills of Norway's interior. Oslo has a fabulous outdoor scene, not just the surrounding hills that are perfect for walking and skiing, but also the huge open spaces within the city center that are filled with residents at every opportunity!
Oslo's main cultural draws include its excellent collection of museums that cover an array of fascinating themes, and the art galleries that reside on the island of Tjuvholmen.
Until the 1950s, Oslo seemed to be rather agrarian in comparison to its more refined Scandinavian relations, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Since then it has surged forward and reformed itself into a cosmopolitan and commercial metropolis with a population of around 500 million and Norway's only major city. Expect a lively bar and restaurant scene, fabulous shopping along Karl Johan's Gate, leafy streets, cool start ups and slick modern architecture alongside the nineteenth-century Neoclassical center.
