Description
Rosas & Xocolate Boutique Hotel & Spa is a charming and very individual boutique hotel set at the heart of the lively city of Merida. Created by joining two mansions, the unique style of the hotel, is a successful fusion of traditional and contemporary.
Rosas & Xocolate started life as two 120 year old colonial mansions that had been uninhabited for some 30 years. The owner, Kolozs Carol Fischer, has transformed the space into an intriguing and intimate boutique hotel designed around Roses and Chocolate and brought to life by the architect Salvador Reyes Rios and designer Josefina Larrain. It really was a labour of love for Mr Fischer, a blending of his mother's name with cocoa, central to pre-Hispanic life of the people of Mexico specifically in this south-eastern part of the country.
Whilst all rooms have their own character, they all benefit from spacious open-air bathtubs (not overlooked of course), for a truly luxurious bathing experience for one or two. Each of its 17 rooms and communal spaces features both modern touches and subtle nods to the region's heritage. Whilst each room features a Bose sound system, high speed WiFi and flat screen television, their double-height walls are decorated using the ancient Mayan technique of "Chukum". Consequently this technique was introduced back into architecture by Salvador Reyes Rios in 1996 during the restoration of multiple Haciendas. This treatment gives rooms an organic and traditional feel and is a great canvas for their solid cedar furniture, pristine white cotton bed linen, rose-colored accents and exquisite tiles. In addition there are large swathes of Henequen (sisal) hanging sporadically around the hotel, an artistic and appreciative reference to Yucatan's henequen plantations of the 17th century.
Since its opening Rosas & Xocolate has received many awards for its architecture and gourmet cuisine. The hotel restaurant is a la carte and Chef David Segovia (from Mexico City) and his team create traditional Yucatecan dishes and homemade produce such as breads and jams for a truly exceptional dining experience.
When you are not exploring Merida by bicycles (provided by the hotel), then the perfect place to unwind is the "Gourmet" Spa, a haven dedicated to revitalise and relax guests in a variety of traditional Mayan ways, including Rosas & Xocolate's Xocolatherapies. There is also a tranquil pool area with loungers and a well-equipped fitness center for those feeling energetic.
As the cultural and financial capital of Yucatan, Merida is great city to explore and a wonderful base from which to venture further afield to the likes of Chichen Itza, Uxmal and perhaps the beach.
