Best time to Visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Baja California is a rare destination that offers a great getaway year long. Peak time for travel is when weather is temperate in the low 20ºc range and whale watching opportunities are at their best (late-November to April). This also includes the festive vacation and New Year period. Cool temperatures are ideal for desert adventures and hiking and boating for wildlife viewing and island exploration. Summer (April to September) can be hot and humid but the beaches are less crowded. Summer waters are ideal for snorkeling and diving. Hurricanes are much less common than in the Caribbean, but it is something to be aware of for September and October travel which is considered low season.
Baja is blessed with two marine life rich oceans; the Sea of Cortez to the east has a warmer sea temperature than the more exposed than the Pacific Ocean to the west. In the summer the breeze coming from the Pacific is a blessing.
For those interested in surfing, waves break on the eastern side of the peninsula March to October and on the Pacific west November to March. The most popular summer breaks start in San Jose and extend up to the Eastern Cape making Los Cabos an excellent base. In the winter the best breaks are south of Todos Santos at Cerritos Beach.
When planning your visit, it is worth noting the peninsula's main fiestas. Each March San Jose del Cabo throws an 11-day long Fiesta Patronal with parades and carnival and La Paz holds a similar event.

Reviews

Wonderful warm service throughout Esperanza - especially in fitness classes and the restaurant. Pretty, spacious rooms with outdoor hot tubs do add a sense of luxury to the property - and has a very young, and modern vibe. Rooms are fresh and styled in an elegant, beachy theme, and offer a wonderful amount of space - especially in the bathrooms! I would certainly recommend going up to one of the higher categories of room, and opting for the top floor where possible to maximize the Ocean View, as the entry level casitas' view is quite limited and often blocked my lots of the gardens. The food is consistently impressive, from breakfast, to the beautiful seafood presented at Cocina del Mar, with it's Mediterranian-Mexican fusion menu (and not to mention incredible views over the wild and romantic Pacific waves crashing against the resort).
Camilla Swift (Staff)
Although not overwhelmingly Mexican in decor and style, Esperanza has an informal and intimate air about it. The resort actually feels a little like an extension of California's Laguna Beach.
Whilst there are only 50 guest rooms in the main hotel (all with fabulous ocean views), the resort itself also has 60 or so residences and multi-bedroom villas, which are perfect for families, and offer a real home-from-home feel with full kitchens. The ground floor villas have a small garden space with private plunge pool, however they have an inferior view.
The facilities here are impressive, including an award winning spa, fitness center and various complimentary fitness classes, including morning yoga, lovely pools, and a wide choice of dining options.
During my visit in September, I was lucky enough to enjoy a wonderful meal al fresco at Cocina del Mar. It's an amazingly atmospheric spot; on the bluff, lit by candles, listening to the waves crash against the rocks below - Definitely recommended!
