If you're visiting Sossusvlei, the best thing to do is avoid the summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit southern Namibia is in winter (May and September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Set amongst ancient camel thorn trees on the dry Auab riverbed, Little Kulala offers just eleven climate controlled thatched villas, charming hospitality and very close proximity to Sossusvlei and the towering red sand dunes of the Namib Desert.
Little Kulala is a luxurious desert retreat situated in the private 37 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve - the gateway to Namibia's Sand Sea with its towering dunes and clear starry skies.
Little Kulala comprises just eleven thatch and canvas chalets, or ‘kulalas’, each built on a wooden platform to provide maximum airflow. With a private veranda, mattresses can be placed on a star gazing platform on top of each room so that guests can sleep under the stars and enjoy the gentle desert breezes. Each immaculate and beautifully decorated chalet has en-suite facilities. The main lodge has an airy lounge, bar, dining room and swimming pool, with a spectacular view of the dunes. The veranda overlooks a waterhole.
Activities are varied and include early morning game drives to the spectacular dunes, nature drives, with incredible views, to see desert game and smaller desert fauna and flora. Walks and day trips into the Namib-Naulkuft Mountains are available. Alternatively, enjoy an early morning balloon flight and be suspended in stillness, watching the night mist clearing on the magnificent sand dunes and desert plains below.
Accommodation at Little Kulala consists of 11 climate-controlled, thatched "kulalas" (the word means 'to sleep') which merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fittings and fixtures, and innovative bleached decks - each with a private plunge pool. Each kulala has a rooftop 'skybed' for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers. One of the rooms is a family room.
There are no specific childcare facilities available at Little Kuala and as a result the camp does have a minimum age of 8 years. One of the rooms is a family room which is ideal for those of you traveling as a family.
Little Kulala features an elegant entertainment area which includes a library, wine cellar, craft boutique, lounge and dining areas. There is also a swimming pool to enjoy between safaris.
Activities at Little Kulala start with morning guided drives to the spectacular towering dunes of Sossusvlei, through a private gate into the reserve. Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve with incredible views, desert-adapted wildlife and plants.
Another option, at an extra cost, is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, with a champagne breakfast being served at your landing site. Horse safaris can also be arranged on request.

Little Kulala Camp is one of Wilderness Premier Camps and the white interiors have been inspired by the DeadVlei area of the national park. The rooms here are really spacious and also have a huge private terrace with a small plunge pool so you can easily while away an afternoon in your room and take in the spectacular scenery and the two bedroom suite is ideal for families. Each room also has a rooftop sleep out deck complete with a double bed which is really cosy when the nights get cooler and sleeping out under the stars here is an absolute must!

Little Kulala is a stunning lodge nestled in the red sanddunes near Soussuvlei. The lodge is constructed using a lot of white wood which is meant to reflect Dead Vlei and it proves to be a stunning contrast with the red sands around the lodge. My cottage was incredibly comfortable, but when we were staying there was a small sand storm so every corner of the room was covered in red sand. But when you are in Namibia you just get used to you and all your things being covered in sand. Climbing the dunes in Soussuvlei is such fun - but running down them is just amazing.
Hot Air Ballooning - Sossusvlei
Enjoy the rocky landscape and sand dunes of Sossusvlei from above, soar over the Namib Desert as the landscape changes color as the sun rises. What better way to view them than from above, drifting gently in a hot air balloon?
Quadbiking at Serra Cafema
One of the highlights, guided quad bike excursions through the fragile environs, is done with utmost care along specifically allocated pathways, so as to tread lightly on the dunes and preserve the unique and delicate habitats of this landscape.
Red Dunes and Dead Vlei, Sossusvlei
On the edge of the Namib-Naukluft are the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei, a dune sea slowly marching towards the Atlantic Ocean.
