The Claridges hotel has been a landmark in Lutyens Delhi since the 1950s. The hotel is a low-rise building, divided into two wings. The interiors of the New wing have been recently renovated with well-appointed rooms and suites with modern facilities. Rooms feature air conditioning, 24 hr room service, LCD TVs, wireless internet connection, tea / coffee makers, a mini bar, electronic safe and Italian marble bathrooms.
A new General Manager has brought recent renovations including refreshing the exteriors and atmospheric lighting which transforms the property in the evenings. The good choice of restaurants and bars attract a buzzy clientele, although in the daytime the hotel is favoured by local businessmen. A new sushi bar is cosmopolitan and sophisticated, and the outdoor Mediterranean restaurant, Sevilla, has a magical ambience as it is set under an arborium. At the front of the property, there is a lovely lawn for afternoon tea and to the rear of the property, there is a swimming pool and health club.
Some of the sights located nearby include the India Gate, the Humayun Tomb, (the first Mughal Garden Tomb built in the 16th century), Purana Qila and Rashtrapati Bhawan, designed by Lutyens where the Viceroy once lived and now the official residence of the President of India. Others further afield include the Jama Masjid mosque, Qutab Minar, the Red Fort (the seat of the Mughal Empire) and the Bahai Temple.
Claridges offers a good value, comfortable and elegant base from which to visit the city.
When to visit
Claridges has a great deal of style and character. Entry-level rooms however can be a little on the small side! Why not upgrade to a clubroom for some high-tech gadgets and access to the executive lounge or perhaps request a room with a balcony.
