Off the main road and down a dirt road you will come upon Estancia Peuma Hue. The staff is very welcoming and wants you to feel like you are at home. My room, the Master Suite, was in the main building upstairs. The room had large windows to enjoy the view and a spacious bedroom and bathroom with jacuzzi tub. The views surrounding the property are stunning with the snowcapped mountains and blue lake as a backdrop. You can choose from a variety of excursions like trekking, horseback riding, biking, kayaking and a boat ride on the lake. There is a happy hour in the main lodge where the guests can come and mingle over snacks and a drink. I took the kayak out when I arrived and went for a gorgeous hike the following day. The rooms are not overly luxurious, think 'nicely furnished log cabin'.
After years of searching northern Patagonia's lake district, Evelyn Hoter—then a psychologist in Buenos Aires—chose a 500-acre lot inside Nahuel Huapi National Park on which to construct her estancia, whose name means place of dreams in the Mapuche language. Originally she and her ex-husband used it as a private home, but now 27 guests can stay here, in luxurious log cabins filled with handmade rugs, furniture, and crafts by local Indians. In the main house, multicourse organic meals are served, and there's a large public living room facing Lake Gutiérrez. Ask at the front desk where to hike in the surrounding Andean foothills and you'll get a hand-drawn map of trails. Horseback riding, biking, and kayaking can be arranged too, as well as off-property fly-fishing, rafting, and skiing, and Peuma Hue's own tai chi classes and massage treatments make it an estancia for the New Age.
The service at Peuma Hue is among the best I’ve encountered anywhere in the world. Evelyn’s love for the place is infectious, and the 20 staff members (including her 25-year-old daughter Sofia), treat one other like family. The fine attention to detail manifests itself in melt-in-your-mouth pillow chocolates, calmly facilitated vegetarian substitutions and discreetly refilled wineglasses.
Outdoor activities at Peuma Hue include trekking, kayaking, fly-fishing, rafting, tai chi and riding in summer, as well as downhill and cross-country skiing, skating, snow shoeing and ice climbing in winter.
