November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days. In March and April, Fall colors are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. The majority of the region is closed for winter June to August, when weather makes the area very inhospitable. December and January are high season and the glacier trips are at their busiest. September, October and March is a great time to visit, when there are fewer crowds, and the weather can still be beautifully mild. Bear in mind, though, that weather in Southern Patagonia is unpredictable.

The property is perched on top of the hill that overlooks the town. The room was on the small size but had "trendy" decor. The have a spacious lobby area, high ceilings with again "trendy" decor. Service levels here are fairly basic, it works well as a base for exploring the glacier. Also good to be aware that for those that need to remain connected, the wi-fi cuts in and out.
Creative and modern, the Esplendor excels with a warm and cozy feeling. This former white elephant was transformed in 2006 into a sleek new multistory hotel with a unique earthy style and stunning windows. It calls itself a boutique inn, but, with 57 rooms, it's quite big. The vast lobby has 20m (66-ft.) ceilings, a huge fireplace, a long line of Mac computers, and low leather sofas. Rooms are dotted with warm fabrics such as wool and suede, and the crisp microcement floors are surprisingly warm. The curtains, with built-in fabric window slots, give you both privacy and a view. The king-size beds are covered in white linens and knitted blankets. Bathrooms include stand-up showers, separated sinks, and soaker cement tubs. More towel racks would help. Rooms on the second floor are the largest; third-floor rooms have wooden angled ceilings. There've been complaints lately of a noisy next-door disco. Ask the hotel if this has been solved before booking. Staff is young and attractive (another bonus).

It's a bit of an anomaly to find a boutique hotel in dusty, functional Calafate, but if you are going to stay in town, then this is the best option by far. I was surprised how much I liked the Esplendor, and it offers superb value for money. Go for one of the suites if you can, not much more expensive and spacious, with a private jacuzzi. The main lobby is quite funky, and it's a good place to have a beer or cocktail in the evening. They also have a great restaurant, which is one of the best places to try local Patagonian specialties such as lamb or morel mushrooms, and the hotel makes a great base for a multitude of adventure tours to Perito Moreno glacier, boat trips on Lago Argentino or a visit to a sheep estancia.
