November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days. In March and April, Fall colors are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. The majority of the region is closed for winter June to September, when weather makes the area very inhospitable. Bear in mind, though, that weather in Patagonia is completely unpredictable, since the winds coming over the Andes are constantly changing.

Description
Aguas Arriba Lodge set deep in the spectacular heart of Patagonia, overlooks a lake and hanging glacier. With wonderful hosting, just six rooms and accessible only by boat or on foot, it makes a superb base for wilderness hiking, fishing or relaxing.
Aguas Arriba Lodge is a rustic luxury mountain cabin spectacularly set in an area about as remote as you can get in Patagonia, in the midst of unspoiled wilderness at the foot of the Fitzroy ranges.
The lodge is around 37 km away from El Chalten overlooking Lago del Desierto from a sheltered position in the Antarctic beech forest. Its construction was a true labour of love with each item brought in by boat or by foot. Hand-built from natural wood and stone, the lodge offers a stunning portrait of the natural surroundings: an emerald green lake, hanging glaciers, forests and spectacular views of the Fitzroy massif.
The six en-suite bedrooms are spacious and continue the natural feel. Some have lake views, others overlook the Vespignani glacier or the forest, and all come with organic amenities. The main living room has a stone-built fireplace and a balcony with views towards the lake, Mt Fitzroy and the forest. It is a lovely place to come back to and relax with a book or a glass of wine after a day spent exploring the many hiking trails, fishing for trout, mountain biking or kayaking. Once you reach the lodge, your host will be able to advise on which activities are most suitable on a given day.
The cuisine is tasty home-cooked fare served in the dining room which has equally spectacular views as the living area.
Accommodation
All bedrooms can be double or twin. One of the Fitz Roy Suites and two of the Glacier Suites may be configured as triple rooms. The lodge's full capacity is 17 beds.
Fitz Roy | The two Fitz Roy rooms measure between 20 and 27sqm and boast spectacular views of Mt. Fitz Roy to the north and the Vespignani glacier and Lago del Desierto towards the west. |
Glacier | Each of the three Glacier rooms measures between 17 and 24sqm and can be found on the first floor of the lodge. Views over the Lago del Desierto and Vespignani Glacier can be enjoyed. |
Forest | Ideally designed to accommodate families, the two Forest Rooms are adjoined by an interior door. The second bedroom, which can be both single or double, can be used as a separate living space if preferred. |
Reviews
Ali Andino (Staff)
Aguas Arriba is located about 1.5 hours down a bumpy dirt road from El Chalten. Then staff will meet you at the pier for a 10 minute motorized boat ride to the lodge. Pato and her husband Ivor are welcoming and friendly people! Even for my one night stay there, I felt like they went out of their way to make sure my stay was perfect. The weather was not great the first day I arrived so I hung out at the lodge. There is no wifi or tv's so it really is a place to go if you want to unplug for a while. The view from the lodge is stunning as you can see a glacier on top of a mountain directly in front. The Fitz Roy is visible from the lodge on a clear day. You can choose from a variety of different walks and hikes to do around the property. Guests can also go fishing or go for a boat ride. The activities can be decided the day of. Food was delicious homemade food. They made an abundance of it, I felt bad for not eating it all. It has such a homey and cozy place.
