Being annoyingly curious about the world (with my twitchy feet), I have roamed across it from diving in Fiji to walking across glaciers in Iceland, but I keep coming back to my first love. I lost my heart at a young age, probably the first time I saw a leopard in the Kruger aged 8, and I’ve not looked back since. I remember sitting on the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana, after a hard day of flamingo ringing, and being blown away by the almost outrageous vibrancy of the sunset and endless skies - there was never anywhere else that could replace it. While working in conservation I have slept out in the open when researching wild dogs in the South Luangwa, counted elephants in the night as they walked in the Okavango Delta and overseen projects in Madagascar, I just can’t get enough.

For me, working in travel was an exciting jump – being a bit (well a lot) of a wildlife nerd, planning the perfect safari is a delicious challenge. I’m also guilty of being a serial organizer, even with my own vacations so it’s all about the detail. Since working here, I have summited the world’s tallest dunes in Namibia, followed wild dogs in Ruaha, cruised the Okavango by boat and trekked to see chimps on Lake Victoria. I’ve even made it back to Madagascar, which holds a special place for me having spent so much time there - with its distinctive culture and mesmerising wildlife. To date, my African tally includes Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe - but there’s always somewhere new to go and the itchy feet are always ready!

My hot picks

My top tips

  • Make an effort to learn a few words of the local language, trust me you will get a lot of smiles!

  • Ask your guide personal questions, get to know them. Their love of the bush is infectious and often their life story is fascinating – they’ll have some amazing stories too.

  • Take the time to just sit back and enjoy where you are, I love just sitting on a deck and watching the world go by (perhaps with a cheeky beer in hand).

  • For budding photographers, be sure to pack both a spare battery AND some spare memory cards, you’ll soon find you have thousands if photos.

  • Instead of packing lots, pack smart – especially for safari. Light layers that you can take off when the heat ramps up in the day or add on when the night chill sets in.
