Enquire NowYour arrival is straight out of an action film. Whitewater raft through jungle cliffs and class III-IV rapids to reach Pacuare Lodge, a rainforest hideout accessible only by river. Days blend waterfall swimming with cultural depth: trek into Talamanca rainforest meeting the Cabécar people in their village of Tsiobata, learning survival skills and forest medicine. Teens ziplines through the canopy, rappels down massive trees, and lunch 20 metres high at The Nest where toucans fly at eye level.
Arenal Volcano brings heat and height. Your tent overlooks the cone from a private plunge pool fed by natural hot springs. Volunteer at Asis Wildlife Rescue preparing food for orphaned sloths and parrots, walk Mistico's hanging bridges above the canopy, then hike historic lava fields. Rainforest Falls delivers the ultimate circuit: rappel 30 metres down roaring waterfalls, leap from 1 to 10 metres into crystal pools, six stages ending with an 11-metre jump finale while a photographer captures every moment.
Playa Cativo closes with calm gulf waters and total freedom. Kayak the Rio Esquinas mangrove maze spotting scarlet macaws and crocodiles, paddleboard across turquoise Cativo Bay, or explore self-guided rainforest trails where monkeys and sloths appear around every corner. The beach becomes your swimming pool, the forest your exploration zone, and downtime your choice.
This is Costa Rica beyond zip lines and sloths: Indigenous knowledge, conservation science, and wilderness on your terms.

This itinerary is best from December to April so can be enjoyed to the maximum during the school holidays. Costa Rica experiences rainfall throughout the year due to its tropical climate, but the summer months (June - October) are classified as the green season where heavier rain can be expected. That's not to say it's not a good time to travel - the extra rain means the landscapes are extra lush but the rain can be particularly strong during September and October. Rafting at Pacuare is possible year-round but may be slightly colder during the green season.
