Average time to visit

The main season in Chile's lake District runs from November to April - the Chilean spring/summer, when all activities are possible. It's also worth visiting in autumn, when it's still very beautiful for simply relaxing and hiking. The area is prone to rain all year but is wettest in July and driest between January and March.

Description

On the western slopes of the Andes, amongst the rolling meadows, native forests and cobalt blue lakes, sits Futangue, a luxurious wilderness lodge perfectly positioned to discover the secrets of Chilean Patagonia.

Situated on a private reserve that borders the volcanic Puyehue National Park and acres of protected Valdivian rainforest, Futangue Hotel & Spa boasts a truly unique location amongst the wilds of northern Patagonia. Hewn from native timber and local stone, the lodge’s single-storey profile blends seamlessly into the undulating meadows and carefully tended farmland of the reserve, with only smoking chimneys and expanses of glass standing out against the forest backdrop.

Architecturally, the building echoes the style of the southern Chilean ranches and stables that have been built amongst this wild landscape for centuries. Interiors are clad in native wood, with traditional textiles, Chilean art and curios from the local Mapuche culture giving the lodge a true sense of place. Huge picture windows look out across the meadows to the mountains and forests beyond, with comfortable corners and roaring fires designed to keep the Andean chill at bay. The hotel’s restaurant, Mesón del Caulle, focuses on regional flavours and local ingredients that range from Patagonian lamb and foraged mushrooms to fresh seafood from the Valdivian coast and vegetables picked daily from the hotel’s hydroponic gardens. Authentic flavours, provincial specialities and artisanal produce are the focus here, served alongside an extensive wine and spirits list.

Futangue’s spa and wellness centre are located amongst the hotel’s sprawling grounds, offering a tranquil space to relax and work out. Choose between the semi-Olympic outdoor pool or the heated indoor pool with panoramic views or relax in the sauna or spa with a pampering treatment. Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy the fully-equipped gymnasium.

In spite of its delicious food and top-notch facilities, the real draw of Futangue is its location amongst the wilds of Chilean Patagonia. 110 kilometres of hiking trails stretch across the property, through ancient rainforests to mountain peaks, tranquil lakes and thundering waterfalls, just waiting to be discovered. Horse riding adventures through the meadows and forests of the Trahuilco valley are the perfect way to venture further afield, following the course of the Rininahue River, whilst keen fishermen can enjoy world-class trout fishing in the waters of three local lakes or the renowned Calcurrupe River. For a more high-octane aquatic adventure, kayak the cobalt waters of Pichi Lake or the hidden Black Lagoon, or up the ante with a white water rafting expedition along the rapids of the Rininahue River.
