Average time to visit

Mana Pools has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zimbabwe's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game viewing, the dryer months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains. Goliath Safari Camp shuts during the rainy season each year.

Insider's View

Walking with Stretch Ferreira through Mana Pools and approaching a huge bull elephant is an experience I will never forget - and not one I would have attempted with many guides.

Float down the Zambezi River at sunset, past grunting hippos, buffalo grazing and elephants drinking from the river...a perfect end to a day in Africa.

Mana Pools means four pools in the local Shona language.

Goliath Safari Camp is owned and managed by the legendary Zimbabwean guide Stretch Ferreira. Set on the bank of the Zambezi River in the iconic Mana Pools National Park, a safari with Goliath is not short of experience and adventure.

Goliath Safaris is one of the most established safari operators in Mana Pools National Park, the charismatic owner Stretch Ferreira has over 30 years experience in this area. Over this period of time Stretch has developed a unique relationship with many of the large elephant bulls and lion prides roaming the floodplains along the bank of the Zambezi. This is the place to visit if you want to experience close up elephant encounters on foot, or crawl up to packs of wild dog!

This is an authentic bush camp with just seven comfortable Meru-style tented rooms. The experience revolves around the skill, knowledge and personality of Stretch – a guide who has a real following throughout Zimbabwe and beyond. Experiences here focus on non-motorized activities which really make the most of the incredible location, wealth of game and experience of the guides.

There is a mess area where guests can relax, overlooking the Zambezi River. The camp has a generator which is turned on each evening when you return from the afternoon activities. It is turned off when guests go to bed. Charging facilities for cameras are available under a tree!

The activities at Goliath Safaris are centerd around escorted walks with Stretch Ferreira within the Mana Pools National Park. It is also wonderful to explore the Zambezi River in the 2 man Canadian canoes. The camp can also arrange game drives in open vehicles, however the camp really specializes is getting out and exploring the Park by foot or canoe.

I loved my stay at Goliath Safaris with Stretch Ferreira. The camp is in the most beautiful position on the banks of the Zambezi River and I spent the afternoon watching a breeding herd of elephant come down to drink at the River. We then floated down the river by canoe past grunting hippos, enormous basking crocodiles, grazing buffalo as the sun set. Then the following morning we tracked elephant on foot with Stretch, and we managed to creep up amazingly close to a bull elephant which was the most incredible experience, especially when you have developed a very health respect for elephant over the years. Stretch knew the bulls well so I trusted him implicitly...but it really was an exhilarating experience.

The Goliath Safaris camp does not pretend to be the swankiest Camp in Mana Pools - it is a traditional style tented bush camp which is built every year after the rains have ended and is perfect for those who want to experience safari as it used to be with an informative and straight talking guide, who is a living legend and highly respected among all the Zimbabwean guides.
