Average time to visit
Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

Luangwa River Camp, built ten years ago, has recently been bought by Robin Pope Safaris and it now joins their portfolio of excellent lodges in the South Luangwa National Park, famous for its population of predators.
Situated on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River, overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, Luangwa River Camp has just been taken over and refurbished by Robin Pope Safaris, who run Nkwali, Nsefu and Tena Tena camps in South Luangwa. Luangwa River Camp has a wonderful main area with beautiful vaulted ceilings and water features leading down to the wide lawned area in front of the camp, which is dotted with sausage and ebony trees and enjoys lovely views over the river to the National Park beyond.
It is a superb little camp with just five very spacious bush suites on wooden decks, set back into the trees and with lovely views over the river. Each of the suites has a large and luxurious bathroom, complete with a sunken bath with a view! The guiding and hospitality here is superb - delicious meals are served outside under the stars, and the camp also offers all-day drives into the park with a picnic lunch.
From Luangwa River Camp there is the option to either walk or drive into the South Luangwa National Park. Situated right across the river, your activities will generally start with a drive or a boat trip across the river, depending on water levels. The game is spectacular, and the direct access into the park allows game drives to explore further and deeper into the park.
Luangwe River Camp can sleep up to 10 people in five bush suites. The suites are individually decorated giving them a unique feel and they each have their own luxurious bathroom with indulgent sunken stone baths and a shower. The private decks offer fabulous views of the river and surrounding area.
The camp has two superb infinity pool for you to cool down and relax in between safaris. If you feel like indulging in a bit of pampering, spa facilities are also available for you to treat yourself.
There is a good mix of vehicle and walking safari year round and the lodges is advantaged by having direct boat access across the river into the park. Bivouac camping is also offered.

Luangwa River Camp is in a wonderful location on the banks of the Luangwa River just opposite the South Luangwa National Park. We had a wonderful game drive in from the Mfuwe gate to the camp, spotting a leopard and many herds of elephant and buffalo on the way. I loved the final drive into the camp which is through the river scattering crocodiles in the bow wave!
The cottages at Luangwa River Camp are comfortable. At the moment only one has been refurbished so it is a bit bigger so there is more room round the bed, particularly when the mosquito net is down. The have also taken out the sunken bath and added in a slightly more practical (and faster filling) roll top bath as well as moving the bathroom round a bit which I think works really well. The plan is to roll out these changes to the rest of the rooms which I think is fantastic. This doesn't mean that I thought that the original rooms were uncomfortable or unstylish, just that the changes took the rooms up a level.
Game Drives in the South Luangwa
Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.
Green Season Game Drives
The Green Season, Rainy Season, Emerald Season, Secret Season - what ever you decide to call it, this is a beautiful time of year to be on safari. Activities are rarely disrupted by weather and the bush is full of life.
Green Season Walking Safaris
Walking in the African bush is a special experience at any time of the year, but the opportunity to walk in somewhere like the Luangwa Valley in the Green Season is a treat for even the most experienced visitor to Africa.
Mulberry Mongoose workshop
Take a trip to the workshop of Mulberry Mongoose, a local company which employs local women to create fantastic hand-made jewelry and accessories, while giving back to the community and the environment.
If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
