Average time to visit

Kapamba is open from 20th April to 5th January. Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

To start planning your vacation to Kapamba Bush Camp

Kapamba is the furthest south of the Bushcamp Company's camps, occupying a prime position on the banks of the Kapamba sand river. It is a great place for excellent walking in a quiet area and is a luxurious yet rustic camp.

A perfect spot from where you can explore the surrounding area, Kapamba camp is small and intimate, with just four thatch and stone chalets. It feels remote and exclusive, and is reached by a relatively long game drive through some of the Luangwa Valley's most pristine areas.

Each of the four stone chalets has beautiful views over the Kapamba River, one of the Luangwa River's tributaries. You will often find game coming down to drink in the shallow waters, including elephant and buffalo. The camp itself has a pioneering feel and is lit in the evening by spirit lamps, giving a beautiful gentle light.

The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully furnished with carved wooden furniture and supremely comfortable beds - but the bathroom is the main attraction! As well as double showers, each bathroom has an enormous sunken stone bath, big enough for two (and more) to relax in! These baths are wonderful in summer, and can be used as a plunge pool during the heat of the day. At the front of the chalets are cleverly designed wrought iron carved gates, made to look like a spider's web, which close at night. Each room also has a verandah with comfortable chairs.

Kapamba works perfectly in combination with one or more of its sister-camps - Kuyenda, Mfuwe Lodge, Chamilandu, Bilimungwe, Chindeni and Zungulila. . Ask us how to put together the perfect trip to explore this wild and remote area of the South Luangwa.

Kapamba features four charming spacious en-suite chalets. They are entirely open-fronted offering superb river views and a wonderful veranda from which to admire them. The en-suite bathrooms have twin showers and luxurious sunken stone pool to relax in. Two of the chalets have twin queen size beds and the other two have a king size bed.

Children over the age of 12 years are welcome to come and stay at the camp. Children under 12 years are only permitted if a private camp is booked. There are no specific child friendly facilities available at Kapamba but children are bound to have a fun and educational time during their stay.

During your stay you can get out into the bush and explore the rich diversity of the surrounding area on guided morning and afternoon safari walks, or jump into a 4WD for a driving safari during the day or night to see a variety of animals. On special occasions we can also arrange an afternoon wading through the cool waters of the Kapamba where a scenic sundowner or special meal will be waiting for you. A truly wonderful and memorable experience.

Kapamba is a relatively long drive away but it is so worth the wait when you get there! It's a wonderful, luxurious camp in a really pristine area, overlooking the Kapamba dry river bed. We took a walk straight from camp and saw a large variety of game including some very relaxed elephant and a band of banded mongoose. Our game drive was a highlight, and we were lucky enough to see mating lion.

The lodge is sturdy and solid, and the rooms are beautifully designed with open fronts (guarded by spider's web design wrought iron gates at night) and enormous bathrooms with a bath the size of a plunge pool. Given we visited in October and it was incredibly hot, filling these baths with cool water and "wallowing" during the heat of the day was wonderful!

  • Game Drives in the South Luangwa

Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.

  • Green Season Game Drives

The Green Season, Rainy Season, Emerald Season, Secret Season - what ever you decide to call it, this is a beautiful time of year to be on safari. Activities are rarely disrupted by weather and the bush is full of life.

  • Night Drives

If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
