Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, typically considered the best months for game-viewing as the wildlife is more concentrated around water sources and the grass is grazed and trampled down. Selous and southern Tanzania is typically hot and humid from December to May, without a dry period to break up the rains, so travel is not recommended during the British winter months. Due to the rains the camp will be closed annually from mid-March to the 1st June.
To start planning your vacation to Kwihala Camp
Kwihala Camp is part of the Asilia Africa group and is a simple yet luxurious safari camp set deep in the untouched wilderness of the Ruaha. The high standard of guiding here and fantastic game-viewing are two of its many highlights.
Kwihala is an intimate camp with just six guest tents set in this exceptionally wild part of Tanzania, far from any other camps so you will see little if any human activity. Game drives and bush walks are a standard part of the day here and the incredible guides will take you further into the wild than you could possibly have been before. The area is renowned for its high concentration of predators and contains a tenth of the world lion population. You'll also find over 500 bird species here as well as a huge variety of other game.
The camp itself is situated not far from the Mwagusi Sand River, so enjoys incredible views of its surroundings as well as a nice cooling breeze during the heat of the day. The six safari tents are furnished in a simple yet comfortable way, are very spacious, and have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilet and shower.
The main tent has a very spacious lounge and dining area although guests will most often find themselves gathering around the campfire outside discussing all that goes on in this fascinating corner of Africa. The guest tents have solar generated electricity for lighting but the public areas of the camp are lit mostly by campfire and lanterns, creating an incredibly authentic and romantic atmosphere.
6 safari tents, two of which can be converted into triples.
Children over 6 welcome although the camp is not specifically recommended for children.
In-room lockable box, Laundry service, battery charging facilities in rooms, en-suite bathrooms, flush toilets.
Game drives, night drives, walking safaris.

Within fifteen minutes of being collected from the airstrip we'd seen our first leopard and within fifteen minutes of our evening game drive we'd seen a second. The wildlife in this area is truly wonderful and Kwihala is a fantastic base from which to enjoy it. It's a great option for those wanting an authentic bush experience, without leaving all of their creature comforts behind.

On my recent trip to Tanzania I visited Kwihala Camp and had a wonderful 24 hours there which was long enough to convince me that they have managed to strike the perfect balance between a classic safari tented camp and a luxury one, in a way that would provide anyone with a wonderfully wild safari experience whilst having enough comfort and luxury to make it a truly enjoyable stay.
The tents are spacious and comfortable with enormous beds, and beautiful white curtains that can be closed. They don't have fans so can get very hot during the heat of the day but there is a lovely breeze through the main mess area of the tent so relaxing there with a book is much more sensible. The showers are bucket showers which really adds to the excitement of being in the bush and there are additional touches such as running water for the sinks, unlike in a lot of camps which might just have a bucket of water. Power sockets are provided in each tent for charging cameras and phones although you are very much in the bush here so don't hope for wifi or mobile signal.
During my stay I was hosted by Lorenzo who kept us greatly entertained with wonderful stories of the bush around the campfire in the evening. He also had a wonderful UV torch which made the scorpions glow in the dark which is great fun to see. Dinners are served out under the stars with just lanterns and the wild around you and everyone eats together and shares their stories from the day. When somebody says classic safari to me, then Kwihala Camp is precisely what comes to mind. It is incredibly authentic and you really are in the middle of nowhere but the added touches of luxury provide a really comfortable stay without pretentious frills. I would recommend it for either first time safari-goers or safari connoisseurs without hesitation.

Spend your days in Ruaha searching for their resident big cats - lions lounging in the sun on the rocky kopjes, cheetah stalking their prey through the grassy savannah and a leopard lurking in the boughs of a tree.
