Founded by Cyrus the Great in 6th century BC, Istaravshan lies on the main route between Khujand and Dushanbe and is an ideal place to stop over. Famous for its artisans, you can check out the blacksmith and wood-carving workshops in the town. Other sites in the town include Mug Teppa fortress and Hazrati Shoh mosque. Try smoked lamb, a famous local delicacy, as well.
