Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit is typically during the drier, slightly milder months between November and April. The ‘rainy’ season begins in the south around June and runs until November. Although it can be hotter and more humid at this time of year, usually it only rains for a couple of hours before the weather clears. The Caribbean coast can be affected by the hurricane season, which officially is from June to November but the wettest months we recommend avoiding are September and October.

Insider's View

Try something different in Mexico City and visit a local Mexican wrestling contest - it's huge fun!

If you're a wildlife enthusiast, visit to Rio Celestun Reserve, a mangrove rich reserve, flocks of bright pink flamingos are the star attraction. The best time to see them is December to mid-March, though they are there all year round!

If you enjoy the buzz of a city, I would extend your stay in Mexico City by a day or two - visit Frida Kahlo's 'Blue House', explore and lunch al fresco in colonial Coyocan, visit the Anthropology Museum and nearby Chapultepec Park and if it's on, catch the fantastic Folkloric ballet!

We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. Call us on 858 345 1763 to start planning your vacation.

Explore the colonial splendour of high-octane Mexico City, discover off-the-beaten track Mexico at hidden haciendas and tour ancient Mayan ruins, before heading to the Caribbean coast for ocean adventures and some serious relaxation and pampering. A perfect itinerary for couples wishing to get more under the skin of Mexican history and culture at a relaxed pace.

  1. Fly to Mexico City

  2. Days 1-3: Mexico City

Begin with two nights in the vibrant metropolis of Mexico City with its intriguing museums, parks, old-school cantinas and fine-dining restaurants, all within easy striking distance of the pyramids of Teotihuacan or the floating gardens of Xochimilco. Stay in a hotel within walking distance of Chapultepec Park and the fascinating museum of Anthropology, which is home to iconic Aztec calendar. Explore the city with a private guide and head out to the temples of Teotihuacan, soaring above the ruins on an unforgettable hot-air balloon ride.

    Accommodation: Las Alcobas (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-6: Campeche

Fly across to the colonial town of Campeche, one of the Yucatan peninsula’s less-discovered gems. This walled city is close to the impressive ruins of Edzna which rise over the rainforest. A tour of the ruins with a private guide has been included. Stay at a beautifully restored hacienda outside the city and relax around the amazing outdoor pool or choose to head into Campeche and explore its brightly colored cobblestone streets where we have included a city tour.

    Accommodation: Hacienda Uayamon (3 nights)

  4. Days 6-9: Merida

Next stop is the capital of the Yucatan state, Merida, a charming city which comes to life as the sun begins to set in the evening, with nightly entertainment, live music and dance shows galore. Explore this city with its elegant colonial mansions and discover its rich history as you explore with a private guide. Merida is also within easy reach of the ruins of Uxmal and Kabah which both demonstrate unique and intricate examples of architecture and design dating back to the days of the Mayans. An archaeologist guide will show you around and give you an insight into life during the Maya times. Stay for three nights at a nearby hacienda, beautifully restored and full of atmosphere, surrounded by vast gardens and jungle.

Accommodation: Hacienda San Jose (3 nights)

  5. Days 9-13: Riviera Maya & Isla Holbox

Finish with some serious relaxation on the turquoise waters and white sand beaches of the Riviera Maya, staying at magical Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa. Located on what we think is one of the best beaches on the peninsula, Belmond Maroma offers an intimate, rustic escape where guests truly switch off and enjoy the peacefulness of this 200-acre jungle and plantation preserve. With the second largest barrier reef in the world to explore, snorkel and dive over tropical coral or get out on the water sailing, sport fishing and kayaking. If more Mayan ruins are on the list, then we can organize fantastic guided tours from cycling around the ruins at Coba to a historical tour of Tulum majestically nestled on the Caribbean coast. Back at resort, enjoy dining inspired by the Yucatan from fresh seafood barbecues on the beach to El Restaurante fine dining and give in to a little pampering at Kinan Spa to recover from all of the exploring on this exploratory itinerary worthy of an Indiana Jones movie.

Accommodation: Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa (4 nights)
