Average time to visit

The South-Central Highlands of Mexico are good to visit for much of the year, although rainy season in Oaxaca usually lasts from June to October, when it can also be quite cold. The best months to visit are from November to May, which are the sunnier months throughout the country and outside of the official hurricane season. It can get hot and humid on the Caribbean coast and in the afternoons there may be occasional short sharp tropical showers but these usually give way to sunny weather.

  1. Fly to Mexico City

  2. Days 1-4: Mexico City and Puebla

    Mexico City, home to some of the world's top restaurants and mouth-watering street food venues. Fresh seafood gets shipped in from Veracruz and there is no shortage of other delights, from tacos in all manner of flavors to natural sweets. Stay for 3 nights in the upmarket neighborhood of Polanco, at boutique Las Alcobas which boasts a critically acclaimed restaurant by chef Martha Ortiz, as well as a top concierge service who can recommend other incredible restaurants in the area. During your stay, embark on a guided taco tour to sample some of the city's best. Or take to the skies and discover the vineyards of San Miguel de Allende by helicopter, which are recognised for their world-class wines.

  3. Days 4-7: Mexico City and Puebla

    Next head to the colonial town of Puebla, known for its variety of cuisine and delicious mole Poblano, a rich and delectable sauce which regularly accompanies meat or poultry dishes across the country.  Puebla has a spectacular backdrop of volcanoes and enough churches for every day of the year. As well as being famed for its impressive baroque architecture and hand painted talavera pottery.  Spend some time at the hotel Meson Sacristia de la Compania which boasts its own cookery school and is the perfect place to get to know some of Mexico's most iconic dishes. Explore the city and eat your way around its many charming pavement cafés and gourmet restaurants.

  4. Days 7-10: Oaxaca and Chiapas

    Your last stop is arguably the foodie capital of Mexico, Oaxaca - home of mezcal, chapulines (grasshoppers) and even more mole varieties than you can possibly imagine. Chilli also features heavily. Stay at boutique hotel Casa Oaxaca which is home to one of the city's best restaurants and a must for dining out during your stay. Be sure to visit the local markets for an incredible selection of breakfasts and fascinating ingredients to bring back and create your own dishes. Spend your days taking part in cookery classes if you wish, or alternatively stick to sampling the cuisine or pay a visit to a mezcal distillery or two.  Explore the ancient Zapotec city, Monet Alban, with your own private guide, one of the greatest monuments of the continent.

    This is the perfect itinerary for foodie visitors to Mexico, however it's also possible to add on time in San Miguel de Allende where you can visit some of Mexico's top vineyards or even Tequila, home of Mexico's signature spirit.
