Boasting iconic architecture, both old and new, this 3-hour tour with a local architect is a wonderful and informative introduction to some of Tokyo’s most striking buildings. The tour begins at the historic Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya, a superb example of Japan’s traditional wooden architecture, before heading to the modern districts of Harajuku, Omotesando and Roppongi, all full of ambitious architectural gems. Highlights include Ando Tadao’s fashionable Omotesando Hills upscale shopping complex; Dior’s flagship store designed by the award-winning Japanese studio SANAA, a five storey, free standing white Perspex box and the Prada store, designed by the Swiss architecture team of Herzog & de Meuron, an unconventional six storey five-sided crystal, with diamond-shaped glass panes varying from flat, to concave to convex ‘bubbles.’ This is a chance to not only see Tokyo’s iconic buildings but to understand the design principles inherent in their architecture.
