Deep in Guanacaste's dry tropical forest, teens can find their adrenaline fix from some of Costa Rica's most exhilarating moments: ziplines stretching 800 feet across the canyon, a 50-foot Tarzan Swing, Via Ferrata climbing routes carved into the cliff face. For a slower-paced day, a hike to a viewpoint where three volcanoes line the horizon makes for an equally rewarding alternative. White water tubing through a mile of canyon rapids comes next, with howler monkeys calling from the canopy overhead, before the afternoon slows down for a canyon picnic beside the river — swapping stories and GoPro highlights over food in one of Costa Rica's most dramatic natural settings. Rio Perdido saves one of its most memorable experiences for last: volcanic mud body painting at the thermal river pools, where warm mineral-rich mud and a lot of imagination turn the afternoon into the best group photo of the trip. A mindfulness session floating in the thermal waters brings the Guanacaste chapter to a close before the journey moves on. The second half of the trip moves to Peninsula Papagayo, where a two-bedroom villa with a private plunge pool, gourmet kitchen, and views across Culebra Bay becomes your Pacific coast base. Private surf lessons with local pro coaches at Playa Iguanitas get everyone up on a board, before the final full day heads inland to Hacienda Aromal for horseback riding and cattle herding with real Guanacastecan cowboys, finishing with a traditional lunch cooked over firewood.

Average time to visit

The dry season from December to April, doesn't necessarily mean no rain but there should be less of it, is considered the best time to visit Costa Rica. The 'green' season runs from May to November and there is more chance of rain during this time with September and October being the wettest months. It is important to plan well in advance for Christmas and New Year to avoid disappointment (ideally a year) as Costa Rica is extremely popular over this time with repeat bookers. Easter and during US school vacations are also best to plan ahead.
