To start planning your vacation to Bamurru Plains
Bamurru Plains offers an amazing luxury wilderness experience on the coastal floodplains of the Mary River delta, on the edge of Kakadu National Park. Here, a touch of style and comfort is brought to the remote wilderness of Top End.
This remote and beautiful wilderness region has no other accommodation like the exclusive Bamurru Plains. The focus of your stay here is on the environment around you that the wildlife and birdlife here call home. The safari suites have all been designed to blend into the environment and maximize the potential to see and hear the natural wonders of the bush - televisions and telephones are not found here - the key creature comforts of comfortable beds, good quality sheets, large fluffy towels, hot showers and plenty of space are what are important.
With just ten freestanding safari suites raised on timber platforms overlooking the floodplains and surrounding bush area, the camp is incredibly exclusive. The accommodation is similar to the luxury safari camps in Africa, all with en-suite bathrooms and much of it open so that you have maximum viewing potential.
Excellent food and wine add to the ‘Wild Bush Luxury’ experience. Evenings tend to start with sundowners and canapés, and meals in the lodge tend to be communal with guests sharing stories about their day while enjoying wholesome and innovative cuisine. Your hosts and guides will be integral to your stay here and you will receive personal attention only possible in a lodge with so few guests - it is their knowledge and experience that bring the place alive.
Whether bush walking, cruising the river or taking a 4 wheel drive safari in Bamarru's Toyata Land Cruisers, you will see wallabies, dingos, crocodiles, buffalo and wild pigs along with fantastic bird life. Fishing, whether for Barramundi in the river or for larger game, is second to none here and you can also visit Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land for more stunning landscapes and important Aboriginal heritage sites.
There are ten safari suites on raised wooden platforms at Bamurru Plains, nine Safari suites and the Kingfisher Suite which offers more room and privacy. Three of the Safari Bungalows have air-conditioning. Each is simple and stylish in design yet great attention to detail has been paid to comfort and all of the suites have comfortable king size beds with 100% organic cotton linen, en-suite bathrooms with high pressure showers and large soft bath towels. Each suite has a covered seating area where you can escape from the sun, curl up with a book or watch the wildlife.
Built on stilts overlooking the floodplains, the décor reflects the region's earlier indigenous history with Aboriginal artwork. Like the rest of the lodge, there is no internet, television or phone coverage, allowing for a true escape back to nature.
Perfect for a family or couples wanting a little more privacy, the Kingfisher Suite looks out over the Swim Creek floodpain offering an intimate sense of exposure to the wildlife and wilderness outside. The suite features a king-sized bed, lounge area and en-suite bathroom. Extra swag beds can be arranged to accommodate a family of 5 in comfort.
Bamurru Plains welcomes children over the age of 8 years. However, there are no specific facilities for them. But due to the personal attention given at the camp, your guide can tailor your excursions in order to suit all of the family.
Meals and drinks are enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere at the central timber and bamboo lodge and are a communal affair with guests dining al fresco around three large timber tables. You can also dine in your suite if you would like some privacy. Bamurru has an inviting infinity swimming pool for all guests to enjoy as well as a library. For a truly unique experience, ask our Travel Consultants about The Hide, the ultimate viewing spot treehouse. The hideaway can be used for birdwatching, a siesta lunch or a treetop sleep out where you can enjoy a night under the tree canopy.
Activities included in your stay at Bamurru Plains include guided wildlife viewing, fishing, crocodile cruises, bird watching, airboat tours, river cruises and 4WD safaris. Excursions for game fishing, Kakadu day trips and helicopter flights can also be organized.

An experience at Bamurru is not easy to forget, and I hope I never do. I have many met people who insist that Bamurru is their favorite place in the world, visiting time and time again, so it had a lot to live up to!
We drove in from Darwin after dark, a slightly disconcerting experience, dodging kangaroos, wallabies and snakes under the darkest night imaginable and arriving on the station to be greeted by freely roaming buffalo and brahman cattle, their eyes luminous in the headlights. Not knowing what was out there was a little unsettling until we arrived at the main lodge and were welcomed into the homely ranch-style homestead building to a glass of champagne! With the noises of the night all around (grunting buffalo and the wallabies chomping on the grass) we set by the fire until our delicious dinner was served up by the utterly talented head chef, Michael.
After ensuring that the wines were up to scratch, we headed for our cabin by torch light, taking care not to approach buffalo cows protecting their calves (they can get rather protective) and settled down for the night, lulled to sleep by the mystical sounds of the flood plains.
Having not seen our surroundings, it was the most arresting sight waking at first light to the most incredible sight - miles upon miles of floodplains stretching out beyond the mesh wall of our cabin, with wildlife just meters away and the morning chorus of the birds rousing us from our beds. Following a glorious hot shower and a hearty breakfast, we jumped on the airboats across the floodplains in search of wildlife.
Buffalo chomping the grasses and rolling around in the mud were a plentiful sight, as were the eye catching "Bamurru" - the magpie geese that give the camp its name. We spotted a pair of beautiful eagles nesting, and abundant bird life everywhere you look. Water lilies open with the sun and give the plains a speckling of white and pink, adding to the wild beauty of the plains. A mid-morning cuppa in the misty surrounds of the paperbarks, looming eerily from the swampy waters, was topped off with a haunting sound of the didgeridoo - a uniquely Australian experience. Large Barramundi lurk in these waters, stalked by their enormous, prehistoric predators. We spotted a giant croc as we whizzed back across the delta to the camp following an amazing morning on the boats.
My time at Bamurru was utterly magical, wild and totally unique and an experience that I would repeat tomorrow if I could!

Wild Bush Luxury is the name of the collection of several exclusive off the beaten track properties - and here the name is perfect! After flying by light aircraft 20 minutes north of Darwin, low enough over rivers to spot crocodiles, you arrive on a dusty airstrip before going in a 4x4 to the camp. The rooms are stylishly designed, with only a stiff net screen between your bed and the wildlife - allowing you to have amazing sunrise views whilst feeling totally safe. The lodge looks out over the Mary River floodplains, where during the day you whiz around on airboats croc spotting - so much fun, even though are you are so close to such terrifying creatures! After a hard day wildlife spotting, I was taken back to the lodge and had a sundowner glass of champagne whilst having a dip in the infinity edge pool. Buffalos walking past, parrots in the trees and flocks of the Bamurru - aboriginal name for magpie geese - were everywhere as we headed in for a delicious supper, especially in such a remote location. The night was filled with weird and wonderful animal noises, but you just have to remember that you are totally safe and enjoy your surroundings. My favorite place in the top half of the country by miles.
