Location
The Fort Printers is located inside Sri Lanka's historic UNESCO-listed fortress port of Galle.
Located in center of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle, The Fort Printers is a charming boutique hotel with 8 rooms and a separate villa with rooms. This chic Galle retreat is the perfect base for exploring Galle and its surrounds.
Highlights
Large rooms with lots of character in the main building. We recommend the headmasters in particular.
Great food and really reasonable prices. The restaurant is a popular destination for non-hotel guests as the food is so good.
The small pool in the central courtyard is not that private but perfect for cooling down in.
Some of the rooms in the main building do get noise from the courtyard but this is minimal as it is a small and intimate hotel.
While today The Fort Printers is a chic, small hotel located within Galle Fort, the hotel building is steeped in history. As well as formerly operating as printers the building has also housed a school and so the 3 rooms in the main part of the building are named after subjects: History, Geography and Art and the suite (our top pick) is called the Headmasters Suite.
All these rooms have high, beamed ceilings and some have beautiful vistas across the roof tops of Galle.
Due to the popularity of the hotel The Fort Printers has acquired and developed an adjoining new wing as well as a villa which is located just across the road. There are 3 rooms in the new wing and they have a much more contemporary feel with polished concrete floors and more neutral décor. The villa is also contemporary and stylish and could certainly be hired exclusively for a family or party group.
The guests all dine together in the main building, so despite being divided by a street, there is a very communal feel.
When to visit
Our first "real" coffee was at The Fort Printers they import Illy beans which taste much better than the thick Sri Lankan brews.
