Activities at Marataba Mountain Lodge

Contrasting mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys characterize this private reserve park. All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with between 600 and 800 breeding pairs) have settled here making this an incredible place for wildlife viewing.

Marataba Mountain Lodge has a particular emphasis on some impressive walking trails in this vast beautiful wilderness. The opportunity to hike in the African Bush is truly unique and offers the intrepid walker a highly personal, exclusive experience. Trails range from trekking over the top of the Kransberg range to traversing through gorges. Regardless of the route, there is always chances of encountering some spectacular wildlife on foot. The trails make use of different areas in the reserve and a variety of trails are available offering a variation of difficulty.There is the option of morning and afternoon trails and of course if you want a more relaxing activity in the afternoon there is also the chance to go out in search of wildlife in an open sided game vehicle.

Morning and afternoon boat cruises are conducted just 40 minutes from the lodge. One of the Marataba field guides will take you aboard the Miss Mara and conduct a slow cruise along the river. Here, keep an eye out for some impressive bird life, hippos lounging in the water and animals on the river bank coming to drink.
