Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Baja California is a rare destination that offers a great getaway year long. Peak time for travel is when weather is temperate in the low 20ºc range and whale watching opportunities are at their best (late-November to April). This also includes the festive vacation and New Year period. Cool temperatures are ideal for desert adventures and hiking and boating for wildlife viewing and island exploration. Summer (April to September) can be hot and humid but the beaches are less crowded. Summer waters are ideal for snorkeling and diving. Hurricanes are much less common than in the Caribbean, but it is something to be aware of for September and October travel which is considered low season.

Baja is blessed with two marine life rich oceans; the Sea of Cortez to the east has a warmer sea temperature than the more exposed than the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Todos Santos makes a good base for surf trips, in the winter (Nov-March) the best breaks are south of Todos Santos at Cerritos Beach. This is a 15-minute drive from Guaycura. Todos Santos attracts lots of surfers who enjoy the restaurants and gentle nightlife of the town with easy access to the beach each day.

Unplug from the modern world and escape to the idyllic Isla Espiritu Santo. Sleep under the stars in canvas tents at Camp Cecil, a truly unique haven for sun-seekers and wildlife lovers, perfectly located on the shores of the glistening Sea of Cortez.

Perfectly set on the tranquil shores of Baja California's Sea of Cortez and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Camp Cecil overlooks a protected national marine park which is home to playful sea lions, schools of tropical fish and pods of friendly dolphins. Situated on the peaceful island of Espiritu Santo, guests are completely surrounded by an untamed landscape of prickly green cacti, towering cliffs and incredible rock formations.

Featuring just eight beautifully decorated walk-in safari-style camping tents, Camp Cecil brings guests closer to nature without compromising on comfort. Expect sumptuous linens, full sized beds and luggage racks, as well as candle-lit lanterns, boho-chic soft furnishings and beach chairs. Guests will wake to the sound of the ocean lapping at the shores and a gentle wind outside as the sunlight comes flooding into the tent; a day of adventure awaits.

A typical day will begin with a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, coffee or tea as you prepare for the day of exploration ahead. Accompanied by a bilingual naturalist guide, your day can be tailored around your own interests. Take a daily boat ride out to swim with sea lion pups, spot brown pelicans nesting on nearby rocky islets or investigate hidden coves where sea turtles rest. Explore the island on a nature hike and learn of local ecology and history or simply spend your days exploring the islets snorkeling with all the animals you encounter. However you chose to explore, Isla Espiritu Santo is an off-the-beaten-path paradise, perfectly suited for families or couples looking to completely disconnect from the modern world.

There are eight tents located on the beach, all with white canvas walls, full sized comfortable beds and vibrantly colored furnishings. Each tent can be zipped up for privacy or unzipped for beautiful views of the ocean and rocky islets off shore.

Facilities at Camp Cecil are of a high standard, with an exceptional beach restaurant, Espiritu Xantus Cafe, which serves three delicious meals each day. There is also a daily happy hour, which is served on the beach every evening in the lounge area.

The eight canvas tents share two compost toilets which are located in separate cabanas as well as two sun showers, also in their own cabanas.

With wild and untouched nature at your fingertips, Isla Espiritu Santo is the most idyllic location from which to embark on spectacular whale watching trips, snorkeling and hiking excursions. The island itself has an incredible landscape, with rocky cliff faces, sugary sand beaches in hidden bays and delicate rock art left by Guaycura and Pericu Indians.

Upon arrival at the camp, activities can be completely tailored to your family and are all guided by friendly expert naturalists. Camp Cecil includes all of your activities, from kayaking to snorkeling, to hiking and swimming. Swimming with sea lions and turtles is always a highlight of any trip, as well as stand-up paddle boarding at sunset. Bird-watching is also fantastic on the island, with blue-footed boobies, reddish egrets, herons and yellow-footed gulls often visiting.

To wake up as part of the only group on the protected nature reserve of Espiritu Santo island is an incredibly special experience. The island itself offers one of the most incredible areas of marine biodiversity in the world - with chances to swim alongside sea lions, kayak with huge pods of dolphins, catch humpback whales breaching and even meet some blue footed boobies, the island alone is an appeal. But add the exclusivity of a private camp on one of the island's gorgeous beaches, and getting to wake up and enjoy the ocean and the activities before the day trippers arrive from their two hour boat ride from La Paz is something really special. Whilst the facilities are basic - be prepared for a simple, shared but incredibly eco-friendly shower and toilet set up, the tents them self are beautiful, with nautical-lux styling and comfy real beds. The food prepared by Giovanni was fantastic, and elegant - and honestly such a surprise in such a tiny al-fresco kitchen with such limited resources (or so it seemed!!!). A really special place - with owners Bryan and Sergio still having a very active presence in to ensure smooth service, a great option for something a little different in the incredible Sea of Cortez.

  • Chileno Bay Snorkelling

One of Los Cabos' few swimmable beaches, Chileno Bay's crystal clear waters make for some great snorkeling and the powdery white sand the perfect spot for sunbathing. Don your fins and head out with a naturalist guide to encounter colorful marine life.

  • Day 5 - Whale Sharks - Whales of Baja Expedition

Few marine areas in the world can compare with the richness of life found in the Espiritu Santo Islands just off the coast of La Paz. Akin to a Galapagos experience, your full day trip out to the islands will be a highlight of the expedition!
