The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian vacation week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

A tiny tropical slice of paradise, Milaidhoo is the perfect antidote to the bling of many Maldivian resorts, bringing back-to-basics, barefoot luxury to the Baa Atoll.
A tiny tropical island, even by Maldivian standards, Milaidhoo opened in late 2016 and proved to be one of the most exciting luxury openings the Maldives has seen. With an accent on connecting with the history of the Maldivian people, and combining it with airy, spacious villas both over-water and on terra firma, Milaidhoo is a fusion of tradition and contemporary design, warm service and total relaxation.
When building Milaidhoo, the mission statement was to create a sanctuary of simplicity that backed away from the increasingly grand resorts that have recently become the norm for the Maldives. You will not find underwater nightclubs or international DJs; this is the Maldives rebooted and back to basics – quiet, relaxed luxury in a tropical paradise.
The resort has 50 custom-made, spacious villas and residences, made from natural materials with thatched roofs that blend perfectly into the spectacular surroundings. Either positioned on stilts over the turquoise ocean waters or tucked away between palm trees on the beach, all villas have been designed to provide the utmost in comfort with traditional Maldivian elements throughout, from the 'undhoali' (swing chair) on the sundeck to the uniquely designed furnishings in the living space.
Focussed on providing an unforgettable sensory experience in relaxed and informal surroundings, Milaidhoo's signature restaurant is set on the deck of a traditional Maldivian sailing boat where you can dine underneath the stars or observe the sea-life through the glass floor. With two further restaurants and two bars, Milaidhoo caters to all tastes and desires.
Milaidhoo embraces and protects the fragile marine environment and has two resident marine biologists passionate to share their knowledge about the incredible wildlife in the area with guests. With a spectacular over-water spa providing the ultimate in relaxation, inspiring activities designed for guests seeking purposeful and memorable experiences and a multitude of watersports and fishing options, Milaidhoo is the perfect haven for couples and honeymooners.
With a choice of over-water and beach based villas, the accommodation at Milaidhoo combines a mixture of traditional Maldivian design with clever contemporary flourishes.
Being such a small island, none of the villas are located far from the main pool bar 'Compass', and each one opens up 180-degrees to offer spectacular views out to sea and allow the beauty of the Maldives to become part of your room.
Every villa has a spacious sun deck with a large freshwater pool, traditional Maldivian swing chair ('undhoali'), sunloungers, umbrellas and an oversized daybed. Inside, every villa offers ocean views, air conditioning and ceiling fan, tea and coffee making facilities, minibar and private wine fridge, flat screen TV, ensuite bathroom with bathtub and separate rain-shower and luxury Acqua Di Parma toiletries.

Milaidhoo is the epitome of barefoot luxury; I didnt see my flipflops from the moment I stepped onto the seaplane at Male! You get a total feel of relaxation walking through the island, which might have something to do with the fact that only children from 9 years old are allowed here!
Its a boutique resort and only has 50 over water and beachfront villas, which makes it a definite contender for honeymooners looking for that special place.
I stayed in one of the over water villas where you can swim and snorkel from your steps. The house reef and the resident marine biologist means that the guided snorkeling trips are a must; we saw an abundance of colorful fish large and small, as well as an eagle ray while out one afternoon.
The food here is amazing and at the Batheli Restaurant, which is set on a traditional dhoni sail boat, you dine on its deck under the stars and experience a modern interpretation of Maldivian food.
After an early morning yoga session I had one of the best massages at Serenity Spa, which has treatment rooms over the water.
Days glide past reassuringly slowly at Milaidhoo so if its peace an tranquillity youre looking for it certainly delivers.

Milaidhoo is an utterly idyllic spot to get away for total relaxation and romance with your partner. Although they accept children from 9 years old, personally I wouldn't recommend it for children or teenagers who need to be kept busy. Relaxation is the name of the game here with activities limited to a few water sports and yoga.
For an island of only 50 rooms, it boasts 4 restaurants, which serve some of the most delicious food including the only fine dining Maldivian restaurant in the world. It also boasts one of the most impressive breakfast buffets I have come across!
As a keen snorkeller, the icing on the cake was the fabulous reef that encircles the island. Whilst most of the Maldives was affected by coral bleaching in 2016, the reef here is recovering well and starting to show signs of color. It is absolutely teeming with fish and other marine life.
