Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Any time of year is fine for a visit except from December to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux.

Be amazed by this adventurous and immersive trip that takes you off the tourist trail to some of Madagascar's most beautiful areas. Journey from the capital to the intimate river camp and the stunning luxury beach lodge where you will fall in love with everything Madagascar has to offer. Explore the wildlife rich Mandrare river before flying over to Manafiafy beach, where you can relax, go in search of lemurs and chameleons or marvel as humpbacks breach during the migration season.

  1. Fly to Antananarivo

  2. Days 1-2: Antananarivo, Central Madagascar, Madagascar

Your ultimate Madagascan adventure starts in the fascinating capital Antananarivo.  You will be staying in the heart of the charming old town at the intimate guesthouse, Maison Gallieni. Its character is enhanced by the originality of the architecture and flamboyant décor. The house has been preserved in its colonial style, with high ceilings and wooden corridors, and each of the 4 rooms has its own individual character and style.
Antananarivo is a city of tiered streets built in and on the twelve surrounding sacred hills, around a long, narrow rocky ridge. The summit near the center of the ridge was easy to fortify, as it provided an excellent vantage point and was surrounded by marshland suitable for rice cultivation. Dependent on your time of arrival, embark on a historical city walking tour, or you can relax and refresh in the lush green gardens of your guest house on the edge of a turquoise pool.

    Accommodation: Maison Gallieni (1 night)

  3. Days 2-6: Southern Madagascar

Time to fly south for some exquisite wildlife in a sublime location as you are collected and transferred to the first-class Mandrare River Camp. Set in the shade of the iconic Tamarind Trees this beautiful camp overlooks the Mandrare River, a mecca for wildlife, and home to the Antandroy tribe. The tents are simple in style but very comfortable with an authentic feel to them with beautiful hand-carved wooden furniture. All the tents have en-suite bathrooms with fully plumbed in shower and toilet with hot water provided by solar heaters.
From the camp you are able to walk and drive to see some of Madagascar's endemic wildlife. Choose to visit the spiny forest where you could spot the lemurs leaping from tree to tree, and marvel at the famous baobabs. Take a walk through the deciduous gallery forest and the littoral scrub forest, or scramble up the massive sand dunes at Lac Anony and enjoy the incredible views over the salt water lake. Spend some time with the Antandroy, the local tribe who have made this area their home. Discover their tombs in the Sacred forests and with your local guide learn about their local traditions and customs.

Accommodation: Mandrare River Camp (4 nights)

  4. Days 6-10: Southern Madagascar

Leaving the river oasis behind you, travel by shared transfer to Fort Dauphin for lunch before traveling onwards (a fascinating journey) to Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge. A stunning and secluded luxury lodge set in rich forest vegetation right on the beautiful beach with crashing waves.
The lodge has two beaches, and between the two there is a viewpoint from large granite rocks (perfect for sundowners!) stretching out into the sea. The main area is designed very much in the style of an African lodge, all from natural materials including the ravinala thatch, and using local craftsmen and chalets are nestled into the forest and overlooking the beach. The lodge is very proud of its eco-tourism principles using just solar power for its electricity and hot water. The food here is superb – freshly caught fish and shellfish including crab, lobster and oysters are often served, along with a delicious selection of salads and excellent, freshly baked bread. Breakfasts are a treat with warm, fresh pastries and a large selection of fresh fruit – accompanied by freshly squeezed juice of the season, a real treat!
You can take a boat trip into the mangroves, where the bird watching is spectacular. At certain times of the year the humpback whales pass by on their migration, and the lodge has a special whale-watching boat which is deployed the moment the whales are sighted. Snorkelling and swimming is offered inside the natural bay created by large granite outcrops stretching into the sea. Guests can also choose to take a night walk in a local area of forest, to spot the nocturnal lemurs, night moths, night birds and other Malagasy species. Spend four nights here exploring the area and enjoying Madagascar's legendary hospitality before transferring back to Fort Dauphin and flying back to Antananarivo.

Accommodation: Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge (4 nights)
