Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

Home to unearthly landscapes and extraordinary wildlife seen nowhere else on the planet, this trip focuses on the north of this captivating country. Journey through Amber Mountain, home to an astonishing array of species endemic to the region. Walk the rope bridges of Ankarana Reserve, surrounded by ancient jagged limestone formations known as Tsingy and sink into the serenity of the exotic island of Nosy Komba, dotted with sugar cane fields and vanilla plantations.

  1. Fly to Antananarivo

  2. Days 1-3: Antananarivo, Central Madagascar, Madagascar

On arrival into Madagascar’s capital city, Antananarivo, you’ll be warmly met by your driver. As you pass a patchwork of paddy fields and head into the heart of this city, feel the frenetic energy as you drive through chaotic roads full of street vendors selling local produce and hand woven garments, clusters of wooden houses and a never ending stream of zebu carts and scooters zipping past you. Although fascinating to see this contrasting way of life, you’ll be pleased to arrive at your hotel in the tranquil old town and check in at Pavillon de L’Emryne.

After settling into your hotel, your private guide will take you to the highest hill in Antananarivo in time for the sunset. Gaze down over the sweeping views of the clusters of historic buildings spread over the city. On your next day your guide will show you the colorful colonial buildings of the old town before taking you to the Queens Palace, with its impressive position dominating the skyline. Now it’s time for a culinary masterclass, bringing together the history and tradition of local food to give an engaging insight of Madagascar. Learn the art of chocolate making with Madagascar’s only chocolatiers or cook up an African-Malay traditional dish using local ingredients from the market.

Accommodation: Le Pavillon de l’Emyrne (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Northern Madagascar

After an early breakfast you will be taken to the airport where you will catch a flight to Diego Suarez. Your private guide will drive you to the outskirts of Amber Mountain National Park where you will check in at The Litchi Tree hotel in the small, sleepy town of Joffreville, just outside the national park. Catch your first glimpse of rural Malagasy life here as you stroll past the street vendors selling papayas and mangos and enjoy a rum tasting from the locals sat on wooden benches in front of their homes. Back at your hotel, tuck into a delectable lunch cooked up by the French owner, who is an ex chef of a top restaurant in France.  For the next two nights your expert guide will take you trekking through this pocket of rainforest. Exploring this exquisite mountainous park and keep your eyes peeled for the bizarre and colorful array of amphibians and the seven species of lemur endemic to Amber Mountain. If you’re feeling super optimistic, scan the foliage for the Brookesia Micra chameleon, the world’s smallest reptile, barely the size of your small fingernail!

Accommodation: The Litchi Tree (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-6: Northern Madagascar

What makes Madagascar such a diverse country is the everchanging scenery. This is apparent as you leave Amber Mountain and continue your journey to Ankarana East. As you trek through this otherworldly landscape, gaze up in complete awe at these formidable limestone pinnacles known locally as ‘tsingy’ and clamber through rocks and ridges to spectacular, panoramic viewpoints. You’ll notice the topography is so varied as you pass lush forests, steep canyons and explore the underground caves. The wildlife here is abundant and you’ll get your lemur fix with 11 species of these intriguing animals bounding between the forests. Your base for the night is Ankarana Lodge where you can laze by the pool in the evening before heading out on a night walk; stay alert for vibrant panther chameleons, moving comically across branches, and leaf-tailed geckos camouflaged against the trees.

    Accommodation: Ankarana Lodge (1 night)

  5. Days 6-8: Northern Madagascar

This morning after an exhilarating walk over the rope bridge at the peak of the Tsingy, your guide will drive you to the west of the reserve to Iharana Bush Camp, your base for the next 2 nights. This is a simple bush camp with sweeping views of the lake in front, with the towering peaks of the Tsingy in the background. The bonus of staying at this part of the reserve is the opportunity to explore the area on bike and boat; discover the serene lake on a canoe, drifting by a kaleidoscope of shimmering butterflies and watching in admiration at the electric colors of the Malagasy Kingfisher.  Cycle between vibrant sugar cane plantations and learn some Malagasy phrases with the local villagers before riding out to the Tsingy canyon and relishing on a private picnic. Head back to camp and enjoy a cocktail on Iharana’s sundeck, watching the burnt orange glow of the sun setting over the Tsingy.

Accommodation: Iharana Bush Camp (2 nights)

  6. Days 8-12: Nosy Be Archipelago

Now for a change of pace!  After breakfast you head south to Ankify, the main port for boats between the mainland coast and Nosy Be. You’ll hop on to a speed boat where you will take the energising journey over the emerald water to the majestic island of Nosy Komba, blanketed in lush forest and dotted with a handful of beach lodges. As you approach the island, you’ll see Jardin Vanille ecolodge, peeking out from behind the palm trees and vegetation. Nestled in a typical Malagasy village, this is a wonderfully authentic island home for you to spend the next 4 nights at your own pace. Let your senses guide you through this captivating island, crossing through vanilla plantations and tasting local delicacies such as Flambee, which is a mouth-watering dish of pineapple doused in rum which is fired up and sprinkled with cinnamon. Take a trip out to Nosy Tanikely, where you will see some of the most incredible marine life in Madagascar, as you snorkel over the reef and gaze in awe at turtles and reef sharks amongst scatterings of vibrantly colored fish. Spend your evenings on your private terrace, looking through the foliage of papaya trees, contemplating the ocean with a backdrop of the brilliant fuchsia sky as the sun sets. Let the scent of grilled fresh fish and the aromas of cloves and ginger entice you to the restaurant to relish on a traditional Malagasy dinner, before falling asleep in your bed to the sounds of the forest encompassing you.

    Accommodation: Jardin Vanille (4 nights)
