Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).
Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

Fly into Antananarivo
Andasibe, Eastern Madagascar, Madagascar
Your journey through the wilds of Madagascar begins. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and will be accompanying you over the next few days. Leaving the capital, you’ll set off on a four-hour drive east, passing bustling local markets and verdant paddy fields, to the rainforest reserve of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. You’ll arrive at Mantadia Lodge, which has panoramic views of the lush rainforest and an ideal base to explore the region.
On your first full day you will hike into the secondary forests of Andasibe. Feel your excitement build as you begin to hear the eerie, whale-like call of the Indri throughout the forest and as it appears, watch in complete awe at it effortlessly propels between branches. Tonight, head out on a night walk and scan the forests with your head torch in search for chameleons and the bright shining eyes of the adorable mouse lemur, peeking out from the trees.
The following day you’ll trek through the lush, dense, primary rainforest of the Mantadia region of the park. This isn’t as accessible as the rest of the park but far more rewarding as you clamber through without the well-trodden trails of Andasibe. Bursts of color will catch your eye as you scan the vegetation in search for amphibians, reptiles and insects. A highlight being the giraffe weevil, a bizarre red insect deriving its name from an extended neck, much like that of a giraffe.
Tsarabanjina, Madagascar
After breakfast you’ll be transferred back to the airport in time for your flight to Nosy Be, in northern Madagascar. On arriving at the airport, you’ll be met by your private driver and transferred down the winding, forest-lined roads and pass scatterings of villages. At the port, you’ll take the exhilarating journey on speed boat to the private island of Tsarabanjina. As you arrive at this tiny island fringed by talcum-soft sand, the staff will be ready and waiting to welcome you into their island home with revitalising drinks. Your thatched villa on the beach has all the luxury comforts you need with a Robinson Crusoe feel to it. You’ll hear exotic bird songs by day and by night you’ll fall asleep the sound of the waves gently lapping the shore.
Spend your days indulging in this intimate retreat, surrounded by azure water, lush vegetation and palms trees. Once you feel rested, you can experience the marine life around the island and scuba dive amongst an array of tropical fish or snorkel if you’d prefer. End one of your days with a private beach barbeque and a bottle bubbly.
