  • Both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Luang Prabang and Siem Reap are bursting with culture and adventure waiting to be explored...

  • In Luang Prabang, make sure you get up early to watch the locals offer alms to the monks, who process through the streets in their symbolic orange robes, on their way to morning prayer. Ask your guide or hotel staff for recommendations about how to dress and act correctly.

  • Siem Reap is a lively town which is the gateway to the Angkor Temples, but has much more to offer than just history. Explore the markets, enjoy the nightlife and dine at the many social- enterprise restaurants. If you have time, definitely go to watch Phare, the Cambodian Circus!

  • To get off the beaten track in Luang Prabang, spend a day on the Mekong exploring the local river life and the villages along the way.

  • The name Siem Reap actually means the “defeat of Siam”.

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Laos and Cambodia is from October to May. This is when the weather is driest and you can get the most out of the amazing temples and beautiful countryside. October to December is a particularly good time to visit as it is very green after the rainy season.

Insider's View

If time permits I really recommend visiting the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center and or Ock Pop Tock in Luang Prabang. Both of these offer a fantastic insight into Lao textiles and how and where they originate. They both sell high quality scarves, perfect for gifts.

Discover the cultural gems of Luang Prabang in Laos and Siem Reap in Cambodia on this relaxed eight-night journey. Start in sleepy Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town with quiet roads lined with wooden houses and temples, and then finish in Siem Reap, a lively tourist town, minutes away from the tranquil ruins of the Angkor temple complex.

  1. Days 1-5: Luang Prabang

Begin your vacation in Luang Prabang, a mountain town home to 32 sparkling temples and dusty lanes lined with wonderful colonial villas. It's deservedly a UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably one of Southeast Asia's most beautiful towns. Your action-packed days will include exciting experiences such as the unique opportunity to trek alongside adult elephants rescued from tourist riding and logging camps, and their one baby, Mr Kit. We have also included a full day tour of this fascinating town, absolutely jam-packed with culture where you will be able to visit the gold mosaicked halls of the Royal Palace and explore working temple courtyards alongside your local guide. For some relaxation, head to Kuang Si waterfall to wander alongside the water, colored an impossible shade of blue from the minerals in the rocks. Have a swim in the cool pools or trek up to the top of the main cascade to take in the view. You may also like to take a traditional longtail boat upstream to visit the mysterious Pak Ou caves, home to over 4000 Buddha icons.

    Accommodation: Satri House (4 nights)

  2. Days 5-9: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

From Laos the journey continues to Siem Reap via a short flight. Siem Reap is the entry point to incredible temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park, and is a lively town filled with trendy boutiques, arty cafes and richly colored markets. Spend a full day exploring the magnificent temples with one of our knowledgeable guides, getting well away from the crowds in the quieter and less well-known temples before spending the afternoon in Angkor Thom and witnessing the mysterious faces of Bayon. Come back at dawn the next day to watch the sun rising over Angkor Wat, the iconic jewel in Angkor’s crown. We have also included a private tour onto Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake. Here you can soak up the beautiful scenery and appreciate the stillness and silence as you try and spot local birds and wildlife. Depending on seasonal water levels you may not be able to venture right into the center of the lake, but will instead enjoy a ride in a recommissioned rangers’ boat, formerly used to chase down poachers in this protected area.

    Accommodation: Phum Baitang (4 nights)

  • Angkor Wat at Sunrise

Experience the majesty of Angkor Wat with a short sunrise tour, the best time to visit this ancient monument and one of Southeast Asia's most important archaeological sites.

  • Elephant Experience at MandaLao

This wonderful morning experience takes you to a local elephant sanctuary just 40 minutes from Luang Prabang. You'll learn all about the majestic creatures and will feed and walk with them along tropical paths and through rice paddies.

  • Explore Angkor Thom

This is one of our favorite half-day experiences from Siem Reap; with specialist guides you'll avoid the crowds and head off by foot into the jungle temples before anyone else.

  • Kuang Si Waterfalls

Visit local markets and villages before heading out to the glorious Kuang Si Waterfalls, an idyllic spot that's ideal for swimming.

  • Luang Prabang Full Day Tour

Enjoy a full day tour of the fascinating UNESCO protected city of Luang Prabang, exploring the Royal Palace, shimmering temples, ancient streets and traditional art and ethnology center. The day culminates in a climb to the top of Phousi Hill.

  • Temples of the Forest

This fantastic tour is geared around avoiding the crowds, getting you to Ta Prohm, Ta Nei and Ta Keo at the quietest time of day. Ensconced in jungle, these temples are ideal for adventurous families and couples wanting an Indiana Jones experience!

  • Tonle Sap on Ella (private boat)

Experience the Tonle Sap in style! Our wonderful wooden boat, Ella, has been designed from scratch to experience the wildlife and absorb the unique floating villages on the margins of the lake.
